AVOID! No syllabus, very disorganized lectures, extremely unclear expectations for papers. He can be very rude especially when he doesn't agree with you (not to mention you will not get a good grade on a paper he doesn't 10000% agree with). Absolutely no help when it comes to improving writing. DO. NOT. TAKE.

This class was a complete disaster. He never gave us a syllabus so from week to week we never knew what we'd be doing in class. He rambles on forever with no purpose or direction. The only reason I passed was because my German was good enough to get by even though it was a lit class.

Not many readings at all. Very knowledgeable about Berlin and Germany history. His lecture sometimes could be confusing, but otherwise everything is good. His papers are not hard.

Professor Pelter knows a lot about Germany and Berlin so it makes it difficult to get an objective opinion. He is very passionate but often goes off on tangents when he lectures. Papers not too hard. The lectures were rarely from the readings specifically and I lost interest often. Wish he would give us a clear overview before we started class.

Hmmm. There really aren't any words. He is a rambler and expects you to have the same viewpoints, but also appreciates them being challenged by intellectual students.

Pelzer is definitely not for everyone, but he is a brilliant man who will work with you. He is flexible with deadlines and gives students choice of what they want to do with the material. If you're interested in the subject matter (and are in upper division classes), you'll learn a lot. Took 4 classes with him and LOVED it.

I highly recommend any class by this professor for anyone with a sense humor and an interest in German. What an intellectual that man is. He seems a wee bit scatter-brained but with time you find out that it all ties together back into his main point....he's a bit of a chatty kathy in that way. Doesn't work for everybody but I think he's divine.

Comment:
Prof. Pelzer is rather vivacious and will know you well. Class participation is huge, but it's always spearheaded by the professor himself. The professor has a brain the size of a goat and he's hilarious but somewhat unorthodox. He's an easy grader but it's more about honor and pride of your own work.

Such a cute enthusiastic professor. The class is easy as long as you put forth a little effort and participate when he asks you to. It's the kind of class you can do very little work outside of it and still perform well in the classroom.

I have a learning disability and he really helped me work through it. He may not have been challenging for many but I was challenged. I probably should have more of a basic knowledge of German by now and would consider the class fairly easy.

Amazing professor even though he is easily distracted by his own thoughts and flickering lights. He knows just about everything there is to know about German history and culture. Even though he isnt a very hard grader, he does give a good amount of work. go to his office hours, you'll have a 2 hour long conversation.

I would not want to learn basic German from Pelzer as his lectures on language are unclear and he is often a bit absent minded. Having said that, he is a true intellectual and a great man, having discussions with him on literature/politics/sport are infinitely interesting. Decent knowledge of German is a pre-req to enjoying any of Pelzer's classes.

I love this man, who ever complains about his teaching, didn't want to learn in the first place. Pelzer is great, and I would love to have had him for other classes.

Brilliant fellow. Because he's an intellectual, class not typical for lang class--run like semiars on really interresting topics. Fabulous resource no matter what class u want to talk about--his or someone else's. If u want to pursue German, he'll do all he can to help. I think he lives on campus.

Pelzer is my favorite professor at Oxy, especially because of his German culture classes. He’s an original fellow; don’t forget he’s a writer as well. German is HARD, but don't judge the professor for that.
