Comment:
Terrible educator. Publicly humiliated a student in class one day. Did not provide clear expectations for papers. Instead of office hours, he met with us in front of the entire class while he critiqued our writing. A terrible experience overall. I was an English Education major with a 4.0 until he gave me a C+.

People loved or hated Barry. I was an older student and not intimidated, and in fact appreciated he didn't coddle. I got irritated at the asinine comments people made and was glad he called them out. He was unique, and I learned a lot. I respect him, and am sorry he's gone. He gave a damn; his passion was real. Loved him. He rewarded too

I graduated from OU in 2002. I took Barry for three English classes and loved every single one of them. It was his instruction that taught me how to closely read a peice of lit. Sure, he could be rude, but all for good reason--to make us think. Students want sugar-coated, hand-me-down instruction. This only produces unappreciated knowledge.

I had Dr. Roth for a course in modern American fiction when I was a student at O.U. in the late 1970s. Although I found it hard to like him, he was a fabulous teacher. He brought 'Mrs. Dalloway' and 'The Sound and the Fury' and other books to life in amazing ways that stretched my mind. He is the OU prof who made the most lasting impression on me.

Barry was a fine professor as long as you did your work and participated in class. He can sense bs from a mile away, so don't try to get away with anything. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the middle of the quarter, so we had a replacement professor. I hope those of you who said such mean things about him feel horrible.

I got my degree in English at OU 18 yrs. ago.Sounds like he hasn't changed a bit-what a memorable character! Back then, as now, he was rude, made people cry, locked out latecomers, was arrogant, ugly, hissed at you with spit globules hanging on his lip- but I did learn a lot! You had to read the Shakespeare or you would fail, which was a good tactic.

This guy is a jerk and an idiot. OU should be ashamed to retain him. IS THIS THE BEST THEY CAN OFFER TUITION-PAYING STUDENTS? He needs a job that allows him to avoid all contact with other members of the human race. He was hateful, demeaning, and offensive. AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS or WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Made people cry. I looked up a definition of a word in the dictionary and recited it and he said, 'That's close enough." I flunked every single quiz and got A's on the midterm and final. Don't know how that's possible. Yelled at me for reading in class (The assigned play!) while he was going over the syllabus, which I had already read. Just plain bad teacher. The reason why tenure is not a good idea.

Barry's classes are an acquired taste. Barry's belittling may seem mean spirited, but it's not. He is trying to get you to be the best you can be: to be as articulate as possible, to stay focused. He uses the Socratic method to discuss novels, and it makes most teenagers and early-twentysomethings feel insecure (understandably). Tough-lovers only.

Well first off his name is barry...'nuff said. Secondly, his last name is Roth, which kinda sounds like Sloth...you know, that guy from the Goonies, and I swear that movie would be a better teacher than this guy. How can a movie be a better teacher?...I know, tough question, but trust me, the Goonies would kill this guy in a teaching competition.

Honestly, I remember this guy saying something in class like "let this Jew teach you good little Christians..." blah, blah, blah. It would be sad if it weren't so comical. If he upset you, be comforted by the fact that when you get out in the real world you will probably be making more money than him, and you will realize that people like him aren'

He is not a teacher, that implies something else than what I encountered. He is uncaring, unkind, has no clue how to instruct on the material. Teaching should lead to improvements, that's why I took the class. I never learned what to improve let alone how. Very hostile environment.

This man only learned the "Criticism" part & not the constructive. He is demeaning to students, critical, and insultive in his assessments. Very pompous and arrogant. He's the only Prof. I ever had at OU that I would transfer out before taking again. Only thing I learned was to AVOID Barry Roth!

Class was poisoned. Not a good teacher --seemed more interested in attacks on students' character than in teaching English. Unclear how belittling a person translates into constructive feedback about one's work -gave little insight into that. Class was waste of time and $.

To "Barry is a God," you didn't learn if you don't know "a god" is little "g" or the difference between "that" and "than". To the person who does her husband's work -who are you to criticize? You are unethical! To Barry Roth -you are a horrible teacher -F! YOU should learn how to teach, take a class

Roth is terrible! Grading unclear (unstated), never explains what is wrong except to say, this is wrong. I did not learn a thing. He is also very mean spirited. Enjoys belittling people, wish he enjoyed teaching that much. I got better grades when I pandered to his ego -what does that say?

Absolutely the worst "teacher" I have ever had! Down right mean at times. Avoid this guy --he is uncaring, unhelpful, is vague on both assignments and grading. I hated the whole miserable experience with this guy!
