Be ready to participate. He's pretty no-nonsense and it's important that you attend every class. Do not piss him off. Also, it's important to meet with him for essays (he can grade somewhat harshly). That being said, he gives very entertaining lectures and is a great teacher. I definitely left with improved critical thinking and writing skills.

He's good with lecturing, but you are graded on only a few papers and he grades harshly.

This is a great class to take if you need to fulfill your gen ed requirement. He keeps it lively and interesting and the homework is usually pretty short. The only assignments are three papers, so participation matters but he is always happy to meet with students after class and gives great feedback. The only book required is a short novel.

Dr. Galgano is an amazing professor. He keeps a history class interesting (hard to do in my opinion) and is very fair. His class is based on 3 essays and participation, so make sure you are ready to talk. He encourages after class help and I always left learning something new. I would definitely recommend.

Class consisted of 3 papers and participation for grades. That's it. For class you read primary sources then talk about them the whole time. He's very knowledgeable and funny and genuinely interesting. The papers are 1 page, 3 pages, and 8 pages and you do have to try pretty hard on them. Overall good class to take for history requirement.

This was a very fun history course. Dr. Galgano is nice and taught history in a way I had never experienced before. We did 3 papers (1 page, then 3, then 8) throughout the semester and the rest of your grade comes from participating in discussion on the homework readings. The readings usually weren't too bad and can be skimmed. No midterm or final

Dr. Galgano was easily my favorite professor this semester. He is hilarious, approachable, and accessible outside of class. He gives a lot of feedback on papers and is happy to meet with you outside of class to discuss them. He really encourages you to think deeply about the topic. I wish I could take him again but he only teaches this course.

He is the man! I pretty sure that I'll never bump into such a charismatic and genuine professor like Dr. Galgano. He flips history on its tail and provides with the necessary materials to look through a scope that is not offered by many other professors. 3 big essays and participation grade are everything in this class, not to mention the lectures.

I have never in my life liked a history class before. Dr. Galgano's Gilded Ages class has been my favorite class so far at school. He's engaging, funny, motivating, and pushes his students to think outside the box and to view the world in a different light. HIGHLY recommend taking this class. I would do it again if I could.

Took him for Rebellions in Early America and it was an enjoyable course. Dr. Galgano is an amazing teacher, keeps the class engaged, and his lectures are very interesting. An all around cool guy. Participation is important. Only drawback is that he is an extremely tough grader on papers, but going to see him helps a lot.

Easy class for a gen ed. The readings can be long and boring at times, but class discussions are usually interesting. He gets really upset if you miss classes or don't participate though. Overall I would recommend this course for a gen ed because he makes history interesting.

Contrary to most other ratings, I did not have a great experience in this class. Some of that goes to the subject itself of course(dense, uninteresting material) but some of it is because Galgano is a tough grader,is not very encouraging, and comes off as pretty arrogant. Sure, he's funny sometimes but that ain't helpin my grade

By far the best professor I have had at UR. I took his class for the gen Ed requirement and it ended up being my favorite class of the semester. There is reading or every class but only 3 essays for the entire semester, 2 of which are short. He is an amazing lecturer who manages to make somewhat dry material very interesting. I can't wait to take another class with him!

One of the best professors that I've had here. He is very engaging and definitely enjoys teaching. Homework isn't too bad (30ish pgs of reading every night), and if you participate in class and meet with him to discuss corrections on papers, you should get an A in the class.
