He doesnt seem like he cared about students at all. No matter what circumstances we have due to COVID, the syllabus says no exceptions, so unless you're dying, don't bother email 'cause he'll just ignore you. Hw and Quizzes are still due during the day before final, so you know, focus on those instead of your other finals instead.

Not prepared for online teaching at all. He was all over the place schedule wise and unnecessarily rude when asking questions. Would NOT recommend.

Professor Hoeger was super nice and his lectures were amazing. I found I really understood the material after he lectures. He gives a LOT of homework though. Like 50 problems a chapter each week. I was kind of scared of him but he is overall a funny good guy.

WORST teacher/professor I have ever had in my lifetime. Only spent ONE SINGULAR hour a week actually working with students in his QandA section where he would yell and degrade you for asking questions. His lectures were recorded from 2010 and stitched together into 3.5 hour vids each, and he references equations on a blackboard you can't even see.

Comment:
The lectures he gives for the online class are just the podcasts from 2010, where he would write stuff on the board and physically reference things, so on podcast you can only just stare at the slides and hear the sounds of the chalk and the board while he says "this, this, and that." Lectures are also unorganized with no examples at all.

Very accommodating during this COVID time. His test was better than expected and he had a huge curve!

Long lectures with lots of homework, but I feel like I learned. Overall I didn't do great on quizzes/exams, but there is a huge curve (cut off to a C or P was 55% for us). He knows what he's talking about, but it can be a lot. Definitely not an easy class, but if you try you'll be ok.

Dr. Hoeger is a great lecturer; it's clear that he knows what he is teaching. However, the lectures a long and so it gets boring quickly. I took advantage of all the resources he provided and it all paid off as I was able get an A in the class. His curves are generous, but THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A. Look for a diff prof if you want an easier A.

Yes his tests are hard, and yes his lectures are long, but he gives his students TONS of resources to learn. However, its up to YOU to take the initiative to use all the resources he gives. He doesnt publish the answers to his exams but DOES go over them in his office hours the following week after the exam. Very organized professor as well!

I love Professor Hoeger, he does have fairly complicated grading criteria however he is very generous on curves. His tests and quizzes are hard and you really have to learn those knowledge good enough to utilize them. He replies to email very fast and he really cares about his student, I give him a solid 5.

He reuses his old lectures and it's SUPER long. He doesn't give answers to the practice exams and his actual exams are more difficult than it can be. I can tell that he is a really smart professor, but that's all the good stuff I can say about the class. He also didn't allow you to go back to the questions on quiz/tests which is frustrating.

He uses old podcasts and lecture slides from past in-person classes which makes everything very complicated for an online class. He does not provide answers to his practice tests and actual exams. The tests are tough and he does not allow you to go back to questions that you have already answered.

Horrible professor. Lectures were confusing and the tests were 100000x harder than anything covered in the lecture and included many questions on material not covered during class. Worst professor I've had at ucsd.

By far one of the worst professors Ive had so far during COVID online class. Im not sure how he was in class, but he is pretty terrible. His lecture videos are 2-4 hours long each with little to no care put into them. The homework assignments are incredibly long, with very little time to actually do them. The exam test your speed, not knowledge.

Take another professor who wont make you feel stupid for asking questions, someone who doesnt have such attitude towards students for no reason and actually puts effort into teaching and making online lectures. Online classes are hard as is, and he made it 10x worse.

Hw doesnt help much, tests are different and hard. He expected a lot from the students who are taking ochem for the first time... on the other hand, he didnt even put any effort into making new lectures for us. Lectures are disorganized, old, and long. He has a very bad attitude. Makes the class very unpleasant and harder than it should be...

-taught for so long that he gained undeserved confidence in his teaching skills -Has a stubbornness and an audacity that hampers him from fixing the problems, elaborated by others, that makes his online teaching flop -How he taught us, or rather how little, in online learning betrays how little he can care for students -better in office hours

Good guy but I had to learn everything through youtube (watch Organic Chemistry tutor). He had his exams structured so that once you finish a question, you cant go back to it, and as someone with test anxiety, it made things a lot harder than it should've been. However, his IA's are the best, they always do their best to help students understand.

Comment:
The course itself was fine. The professor however frequently posted late lectures and did not post grades until the final was already over-- confusing. Do not bother reaching out to him because his response will be unhelpful/unaccommodating. Be prepared to be frustrated if you have an issue you need to take up with him especially concerning grades.
