Comment:
Dr. Miola did not help me at all this semester and completely ignored my DSS plan for accommodations including absences and extensions for ADHD. He never told me I was at risk of failing the course and called me and other students "stupid" "foolish" and "imbeciles" for asking questions. Worst professor I have ever had.

This guy's teaching is a complete mess. Extremely unorganized but expects the opposite from students. Never put anything online. Arbitrarily gives low grades with no reasoning. One time he told us to "jot down answers" to questions "just to show that we read," but then proceeded to dish out low grades and complain about the quality of them. Avoid.

Miola is one of Loyola's hidden gems. He is one of the top ranked Shakespeare scholars in the world, and makes Shakespeare come to life. Such a great guy with a great sense of humor, and makes the class stand out.

Prof. Miola is a really nice guy and solid teacher, but his Latin 104 class was very difficult. There was a lot of work every night, and some of his test questions did not really relate to you knowing the translations and grammar. Study a lot more than you think you have to and you will be fine on quizzes/tests.

Dr. Miola is probably the best professor Ive had so far at Loyola. Not only is he one of the most intelligent people Ive come across, but he truly cares about his students and wants them to be successful. His assignments are challenging but not impossible.

Dr. Miola is one of the best profs at Loyola. He truly cares about his students and making them understand Shakespeare. Final project was putting on a scene which was lots of fun.

For a Latin class, daily homework but you need the practice. Not too many quizzes, midterm, and final. He's a brilliant man, but too smart for a 100 level class. When in doubt, translate in study groups, and do not be afraid to be wrong when you participate in class.

Comment:
For students in the honors program especially, Dr. Miola's expectations are far too high. He is extremely condescending. He gave me back my first essay with one of the only comments being, "this was not a successful essay." In my defense, Dr. Miola gives very little direction. Needs to know we take other classes. Nice guy overall, not when grading.

Dr. Miola is one of the smartest people I've ever met. However, he expects students to be at the same level as him and he has a doctorate in Renaissance Literature. He gives long papers: one 5-page, one 10-page, and 2 LONG midterm and final take home exams. He is not clear on any directions and this was by far the hardest class I've ever taken.

Dr. Miola is the most condescending professor I have ever had. He addresses the class as children in emails. His expectations for his students are COMPLETELY unrealistic. He had a 10 page paper due and assigned a 12 page take home portion of the final due three days later. Yes, he's very intelligent; however, he's out and out rude to his students.

Dr. Miola is one of my favorite professors at Loyola. The class is fast-paced and there are many 1-page responses, LOTS of required reading, a couple of tests, midterm, final, and many pop reading quizzes. Dr. Miola is always willing to help and is extremely passionate about the material which makes class very engaging and interesting!! Take him!

Dr. Miola is the most intelligent man I have ever met. He wrote his own text book and explained Catholic poetry in a very interesting manner. Heavy reading, one response(2+ paragraphs) a week, one 10 page paper, 1 presentation, 1 final which is partial take home.

Very nice man and truly passionate about teaching his students. I wasn't super excited about taking English but it turned out to be a very enjoyable class, highly recomend Miola, he will change the way you view English. I got a B, not the easiest class, but you learn alot and its not that much work, just a tough grader on papers.

If you are not willing to read a lot for this class I highly suggest not taking it because Prof. Miola gives reading every night and occasionally has pop quizzes on the reading. This class relies on discussion so he really expects his students to understand the reading before they come to class.

One of my favorite professors at Loyola. I have always hated Shakespeare and poetry and he made it easy and actually fun to learn. I loved this class. There are quizzes at least once a week (sometimes they are hard) but if you do the reading you will do fine. If you make the effort he is more than happy to help you. I definitely recommend him.

Yes, Prof. Miola can be tough if you are accustomed to not putting much thought into your work yet still getting A's. Quizzes are easy. Tests are fair. And you'll do well on papers provided that you make an actual point. He's not closed-minded as some have said, but encourages original thought. Take him. He's brilliant. The smartest man I know.

Passionate, dedicated, and highly intelligent. He will be honest if you aren't working up to your potential but he allows you to make changes to papers if you don't do well. He is easy to meet with and will help you understand. His lectures are interesting and he is fair but pushes you to excel-which is great!
