Comment:
Though a good portion of her lectures are spent doing housekeeping or going over materials she's posted, the 'meat' of her lectures are solid and very informational, she's always open to questions, and is generally a very lovely professor. Solid choice for ENGL110.

Your grade is based on the completion of 5 assignments and she provides several samples of each assignment to compare yours to. She provides useful feedback on assignments. Most lectures focus on how to succeed on the assignments and she does 4-5 lectures a month. She is INSANELY accommodating... especially now. Weekly discussion assignments.

Overall ENGL301 is an decent class. It's not a grammar focused class but rather learning to write in professional settings (emails, reports, letters). Professor Baxter is not the most engaging professor but she is very clear and easy to understand. Grading is fair and in depth feedback is provided. Willing to help and accessible outside of class.

Second time in her class, shes great. Really fair in her marking and writes in depth feedback for your work. Promptly replies to emails and is always willing to help.

Shes pretty chill. A midterm paper, a term paper, a take home final and participation makes up your grade. She gives in depth feedback on your midterm paper so you can succeed on your term paper. She gave us an extension for our term paper if 80% of the class did the course evaluation, so shes hella fair.

Comment:
Gisele's lectures are snoozefests which typically consist of her talking about the texts in front of the Canvas home page screen. She doesn't use slides for ENGL 243 so you have to be there to actually learn, that is if you don't fall asleep. Even as a GPA booster, I wouldn't recommend if you actually care about how you're spending your tuition.

Comment:
Gisele is a sweet and hilarious prof. Although I was a bit disengaged in lecture (that's just me, I'm in quarantine and I fall asleep often, she was always entertaining and made several references to pop culture. Her instructions for assignments are clear and she gives many course notes and materials so her students can study.

Comment:
Gisele is good at communicating things promptly outside of class, but her lectures consist more of random personal stories with a few quips added about the assignments in the last minutes of class. It's hard to see the relevance, and the marking is not that easy. Take this class via the online option if possible.

Comment:
Gisele is the sweetest prof, just super caring and understanding. Has great insights into the literature in her area of expertise. Lectures are always interesting and the Canvas-based discussions will actually benefit you in terms of stimulating thought (as long as you put in some effort of course). Often gives voluntary extensions on assignments.

I have never seen so many people asleep in a class... Even in high school. Nonetheless, she has four assignments all year besides her multitudes of participation boosters which are useless in the end. Also, whatever grade you would get on the first assignment is your end result in the course and there is barely any leeway to change that grade.

She rarely discusses the assigned readings in class. I did other hw in this class as it usually the same spiel all week long. Get's distracted super easily, taught us how to search on the library website for a whole class. Easy grader though so if you can put up with boring lectures she's great. Also slack final and the assignments are easy too.

Comment:
The class itself is easy, but incredibly boring. Possibly the most boring and useless class I've taken at UBC. I cannot think of a single thing I've learned in the course. Gisele is nice and approachable, but has a very annoying tendency to overrepeat information and goes off on long tangent stories completely unrelated to course material.

A very clear and straightforward prof. She really makes ir clear what shes looking for in our essays and gives super helpful feedback for us to improve. While the lectures were a little dry, readings help participation so much and it becomes more bearable. I wrote all my essays 30 mins before the deadline, did 0 of the readings and got and A

Prof. Baxter is super lenient and extended course deadlines often. She grades her papers fairly, so that you get the grade that you would expect. She's super helpful, understanding, and responds to questions by email ASAP. Not much effort is needed to pass this course as long as you complete the assignments. Lectures are quite boring though.

Gisele is super boring in class, but she is in essence a very nice and sweet professor that is lenient and cares about her students. Just try not to fall asleep. Show up and do the midterm, finals, and papers well and you will do fine. Easy grader in general too. Lots of opportunities to do well. 10/10 would recommend.

Comment:
Lectures were a bit repetitive and boring. She is extremely concerned with keeping possession of all of her IP and makes it known regularly, which is her right, but adds to the repetition. However everything that needs to be done is laid out extremely clearly, and the papers are marked much easier than I assumed.

Gisele Baxter is very clear in her expectations, uploads detailed learning modules on Connect, and is a very generous marker! The key to getting a good grade in her class is to participate regularly, do most of the readings, and put some effort into your critical analyses. The final exam was pretty easy too.

I think people assume this class will be easy just because it's on children's books. While the readings are quite easy, be prepared to do some critical analysis and preferably have taken some english courses already. Overall, a great course, and she's honestly the most helpful professor I've had. Extremely prompt with emails, and very accommodating

Comment:
HER LECTURE CLASS IS DEFINITELY THE MOST BORING CLASS IN UBC HANDS DOWN! SHE DOESN'T TEACH US ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE,RATHER SHE GOES ON AND ON ABOUT THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT THAT IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE COURSE.I LEARN FROM BROWSING INTERNET MORE THAN A WHOLE SEMESTER OF HER LECTURES
