This was my undergraduate seminar and I lucked out that the topic was Weimar/Nazi Germany and a massive portion of your grade is your thesis 15-20 page paper that is 50% of your grade. This was also the covid semester where we were sent home halfway through and Lang was very accommodating. Not an easy A prof but if you do your work, you'll be ok.

Can't stand him. While he has decent grading standards, he goes on for five/ten minutes each class about phones and class distractions. He also cannot handle students asking questions; if a student knows something he doesn't, he blows them off. I hope I do not have him again.

Michael Lang was the worst experience I've had in my academic life. Not only is he unprofessional ( he literally spent an entire week calling out students on their phones and ranting about how he wasn't a commodity) but he let his TAs grade papers with very little feedback or quality. I marked him as hilarious because, looking back, I have to laugh

Great Professor. He knows a lot and the class is easy as long as you go to it. He is very available to speak with and is super open to questions of all kinds! Office hours are awesome and the textbook is actually quiet interesting. Great Academic Advisor as well if you have the chance to have him.

Where do I even begin. This teacher is smart, really, he knows what he's talking about, but by golly you sure as hell won't at the end of the lecture. The man has paper thick skin when it comes to students, spent 20 mins of a class berating one poor sod. The TAs grading is all over the spectrum, and rather harsh for what's asked for in syllabus.

Lang is lecture heavy and hates phones/side talk. Very intelligent though. Hty 241 has a very compelling thesis.

Holier-than-thou attitude. Average lecturer. Doesn't take kindly to being wrong, even if proven to be. Claims to be open-minded, is marginally so. Not a horrible prof, classwork not particularly hard.

Great feedback that helps improve your writing. Interesting primary source readings that help you view important world issues and events from different perspectives. Interesting lectures. IS very open to different opinions--but only if you can argue or explain them logically. Visceral reactions won't fly in his classroom and that's not a bad thing.

Overall he would be considered it love or hate Prof. is a really smart guy, decent teacher, horrible personality. Although I told him no personal ill will, he can be incredibly condescending, and discourages dissent within class despite his claiming that he encourages discussion.

Definitely the type that student's either love or hate, but I thought he was a great professor. Lectures are intense so prepare to really pay attention, though if you're in school to actually learn they are awesome. Lots of writing in the class too but with plenty of feedback to really help you improve. Overall a great professor and class.

I took the History of Western European Civilization with him and I really enjoyed it. His lectures weren't always super organized but he would always answer questions. He was really funny and had a lot of knowledge and love for history. I would definitely take his class again. Just one tip though, don't talk or text in his class, he gets very angry

Nice guy, funny lectures. Tests weren't too hard as he gives out the complete test like 2 weeks before the test date and you just have to memorize the answers. Book not completely necessary but would definitely help if you want an A. You should probably go to most lectures because he can cover a lot in a day sometimes. Would recommend him though

He's honestly a great lecturer, and can easily bring humor into the class. I've only taken one semester with him, but am taking another class with him next semester. I definitely recommend this professor to anyone that is looking for a fairly easy class, that's also fun.

VERY unclear in lecture. No visual aids. Mentions many very specific things, but does not tie them together with the overall theme. Mentions "key" things that you should know without ever actually explaining them. Your entire grade depends on your TA. Very abrasive personality, generally disliked.

Lang is the kind of professor that some will love (as I did) and some can't stand. He is a very vocal professor, encourages discussion and will get mad if you do not. Attendance not necessary but he gets mad when a lot do not show up. Honestly to get in his good book just come to class and pay attention and contribute. Hes 1 of my faves on campus.

It's a good class and I learned a lot. Lectures sometimes drag on, but are usually interesting enough. I got the sense that he sometimes did not want to be there, some times he was really engaged though. Do the reading!

He was my advisor freshman year. He threatened me, swore at me, and actually I switch my concentration just to get away of him and how terrible he was. This was first and only time we had met. I?m still unsure of what his problem was but if I were you I would run away to avoid his unstableness.

Took History of Globalization and Modern European Civilization. He actually made history interesting, looking at it as a product of current changing paradigms and not just names and dates. Very interesting classroom discussions and a fun teaching style.

Completely incoherent. Never organized. Horrible lecturer. His grading is all over the place and his TA's are awful; they don't even do the reading! I don't know where these other comments are coming from, but he's quite possibly one of the worst professors I've had in my 4 years at UMaine.

Great professor. His politics come through, but he does so respectfully and is eager for students to disagree...but also respectfully. Lectures are interesting, textbook complements nicely, assignments are FUN.
