I can see why some people didn't care much for him--he's getting old and doesn't put up with silly nonsense unless it has a point. Who wants to have their time wasted over trivial crap that isn't even part of the equation? very personal with my class of 8 students, very down to earth, and willing to speak to you as his equal, not subordinate.

Not good. Hated his lectures because he has such a monotone voice. All of the text books he had us read (including one of his) were very dry and boring. Just hard to concentrate and participate in his class, definitely would not take ever again.

Took "20th Century US History" spent almost half the semester talking about the 1888 World's Fair in Philadelphia because he was from there. Then glossed over WW2 in a class and a half. Pretty much just talked about what he wanted to with no regard to class content.

Professor Segal gets off topic so incredibly easy and has a very monotone voice so lectures are little difficult to get through. His tests aren't over anything he makes you read in class and the review sessions are hopeless. I don't plan on taking a class with him ever again and I pray for you if you do.

Always off topic, but in a good way. A great prof for a small class setting as he was great at leading class discussions. Some of the readings assigned were very long.

One of the best history professor's at UMaine. Excellent. Interesting, funny and extremely helpful. Wish more professors were like him. When you are in his class you are not a number. Class is easy to follow and interesting.

Prof. Segal is brilliant, funny, encyclopedically knowledgeable, and unabashedly liberal. I'm with the rater who said if what you're after is a free ride, go back to high school. If what you're after is a lot of knowledge and an intellctual challenge, study with this guy.

WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD at UMaine! He is dry and talks about things that have NOTHING to do with U.S. History. I truly feel he is not an intelligent person and is an extreme bigot. Just looking at him pisses me off.

Very much a pleasure to listen to his views. Do not come to the class if you hold deeply conservative views, because you will just be blown out of the water by his. Incredibly knowledgeable of the world and America's place in it then and now. Pleasure to have hime

Absolutely terrible. Reads from lecture notes from his own books. Extremely liberal with ZERO courtesy to other people's views. "Conservatives do not have hearts". Tangents are frequent & totally irrelevant. Midterm & Final all in short answer/essay form. Study guide is misleading. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Avoid at all costs!

Segal is an absolutely awful professor. He spent so many hours brainwashing his students with his outlandish political views, that have NO relevance to U.S. History. His attempt at lecturing consisted of him reading off a page of lecture notes that he made years ago and quoting, the book, which he wrote, which is extremely dry.

Terrible professor! He spends more time defending his pointless theories on how technology is a metaphor for society. Goes off on tangents about nothing making lecture completely useless. Takes attendance and there are only 2 exams.

This class is awful, don't take it. He talks in circles and what he talks about is not on the midterm or final. Work needs to be flawless to get an A.

Very funny guy. Lots of good books that are mandatory. Very spirited discussions and very tolerant of opposing views. He is very liberal but fair to conservative arguments. Grading is fairly easy, but you must do excellent work to get an A.

pompous beyond words. uses his own book and thinks it is amazing. talks in circles, it is almost impossible to pay attention. tests are hard. he asks about things he never really covered. don't take this class if you can avoid it.

Very boring teacher who sometimes gives incorrect information to student. although funny about somethings he seems like he doesn't want to be there although he is older and has probably been teaching for a while. Teaches more about his book then the actual information that he is suppose to teach. don't take him

Great sense of humor. Good lectures and texts. Tests were hard because it's a college course. Attendance is mandatory as it should be. If you don't show and the tests are too hard, go back to high school.

Willing to help students and gives outlines to his lectures. Attendance and quizzes/videos help boost your grade and they aren't difficult at all. Not a heavy workload and you'll do well on the midterm and final if you study the material properly.
