I NEVER post reviews for anything, but if It means saving someone from having to deal with this class, I will do what I can. DO NOT take this class as an English gen ed. The only way you will succeed in this class is if you are a die hard English major who excels in the subject. Im a junior and Ben is the toughest grader of any professor Ive had.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FOR GEN-ED REASONS ONLY, just not worth it He's a great person, but a horrible professor. He loves to send emails on Wednesday mornings with homework that is due on Thursday in class, and does not follow syllabus. Randomly calls on students, and tells them their interpretations of poetry is wrong (even if its up for debate).

Ben is probably one of the nicest professors I've ever had. His classes have a lot of work. However the work is very sporadic, some weeks you might just have to read, others you might have to do a lot. But all in all, he can be very caring if you participate in class.

Gives an insane amount of work and expects you to know difficult concepts before he even fully covers them. Don't take for GenEd credit. Also doesn't give out assignments until the class before they are due.

Comment:
Ben is incredibly soft-spoken and quiet. At times, this makes it difficult to hear what he says. However, he's very kind and willing to help so don't be afraid to ask him to repeat something. He's also incredibly funny in an awkward, nerdy way. Lectures are very enthusiastic and you can tell he's passionate about teaching. Very disorganized, though

Friedlander is a real nice guy. I was happy to find that he DOES seem to value student opinions and ideas. I didn't seek extra-curricular help from him, but I believe he'd make himself available. He was also a fun, interesting lecturer. The bad: Constantly shifting due dates, but he is fair. Reading assignments did not exactly follow the syllabus.

Comment:
Ben seems like a really nice guy, and I can tell he really is passionate about the subject matter. However, he seems to not like your ideas if he didn't have a preconceived knowledge of them. He's very bad at posting assignments, sometimes not until the night before they're due at a late hour, and gets angry and gives 0s when we misunderstand.

Definitely an acquired taste. He can come across as scatterbrained, but he is very passionate about the material he is teaching. I took two classes with him and loved them. If you are passionate about the class, take it with him. If you just want to pass, his enthusiasm will probably irritate you.

He is the most disorganized teacher I have ever had. We didn't get our midterms back until the week before our final was due and he rarely sends assignments on time. I don't find him to be especially clear in his descriptions. I wouldn't take his class again.

Friedlander has no appreciation of human emotions or knowledge which are the very root of literature. A subpar English course taught by a glorified community college teacher, this course is appropriate for those not interest in English. Instead of demonstrating the poetry of life, he mocks the very roots. Key words: Disorganized, late, snobbery

Great professor, be prepared for those uncomfortable silent moments when no one knows what to say. He's a good professor and you would be remiss if you didn't take a class with him.

I found him to be very enjoyable as a professor. He really knows his stuff about poetry. I'm not sure where the "mocking you if your point of view was wrong" came from, because he was very respectful. He's rather finnicky with what he wants, but it's not difficult to follow. I also discovered how to get out of class using lumber and an old man. =p

Be careful when you're voicing your opinion in class. He either won't care, or will make fun of you for being wrong. He's very unclear with his grading, and even more unclear when it comes to what he wants on assignments. If you're offended easily, or aren't an extremely hard worker, don't take his class. Blech.

Horibble teacher!! Bumbles all through the class and is never clear on anything. Contradicts his own assignments and will find everything wrong with you paper. If you got A's in high school forget getting them in this class.
