Took his class twice my freshman year and was not prepared for all of the work. I actually did worse the second time around ... If you have a good memory and are looking to take a class that is straight memorization, this is the class for you. If you are looking for an easy A, don't bother.

Mr. Templeton does not tolerate laziness, lack of preparation, does not coddle you, and does not provide positive reinforcement without merit. He requires you to be informed for debate; arguing your Google research is a non-starter. This class requires adult maturity for maximum benefit. Don't be a petulant entitlement turd and you'll excel.

Overall, probably the worst professor I have had at UMBC. He insulted multiple students and was pretty intellectually dishonest in debates and, especially, presenting religious ideas.

Very boring class, he comes off as rude and pretty much against debate. If he likes you he is nothing but nice to you. This class required a lot of memorization. A lot of people dropped because of there poor quiz grades. He is a gentleman and expects his students to show the same respect. Requires more studying than i anticipated but i did learn.

Absolutely no interest or respect for the subject matter. Knows nothing but the textbook about it (very poorly written, do not expect to be examining any primary sources or religious writing. It reads like an elementary history book.) Intentionally vague in his questions, supports a blanket rejection of Asian thought.

Comment:
He comes across as standoffish, though he is a really nice guy. He doesn't dismiss dissenting opinions, he encourages people to question what he has said. He does however dismiss opinions that aren't well thought out or are unreasonable. The class is relatively boring, but will not take up much of your time. Easy A.

Comment:
Templeton uses his text book, speaks clearly in lecture, and gives easy tests but these standards, while necessary, are not sufficient conditions to judge the quality of the professor. The problem is he is an egoistic man who immediately dismisses other people who disagrees with him, especially when the disagreement is reasonable.

Completing the homework & studying for 30 minutes was all I needed to do per week. Though I failed a couple quizzes, the extra credit quizzes he gave were enough to get me over a 100% in the class. As long as you show up every day & aren't late you can get the extra credit points and get an A.

Terribly hard class, even if you study the subject is very confusing and there is no black and white between different types of philosophical fallacies. Even if you do study absolutely everything (which takes a long time) you might get a C, or a B if you're lucky. Don't plan on getting a good grade in this or getting something out of it.

Book is somewhat helpful though we didn't read over the whole thing.Only read description and examples. He hands out a lot of papers. He only has 3 extra credit quizzes. One wrong answer can end you up with -5 to 7 points. Not much half credit.I feel like the class is more on your opinion.Class mandatory. We get out after a half hour of class.Dont argue

His class isn't easy. Whenever you take a quiz, you might as well just flip a coin to see if you passed/failed. He is an atheist. Who cares. That's his view; let him have it. However, I have found this course helpful in recognizing weak arguments, which I realized are everywhere. Take this if you're willing to study a lot(his lectures are boring).

Yeah he's an athiest and if it gets brought up in class he makes his opinion clear;I personally am a christian and found it a little annoying how close minded he was but has nothing to do with his competency to teach the class.Class was not difficult, if you have half a brain you won't have to study. Got an A w/ maybe 4hr time spent out of class

If you're planning on taking this class, don't. The teacher is uncompromising and difficult. The quizzes are impossible even if you do study. Questions are frequently met with scrutiny and there is an air of tyranny at the front of the class. You will not pass.

He is the worst teacher I have ever had. Clearly has no interest in students. Thinks the entire world is full of idiots. Guess what Mr., if you are so intelligent why are you a part time professor at UMBC? He is extremely arrogant and just plain rude but expects you to be polite to him at all times. I feel sorry for his relatives....avoid him.

Don't be put off by all the bad ratings. I'd bet most of these are religious people and it is true that Mr. Templeton is a staunch atheist. Religion is a touchy hot button and will make it so a fair rating is impossible. Not hard material at all. If you can forget your way of thinking you may be able to learn something.

AVOID this teacher if possible. Exams are without a doubt way more difficult than they need to be and don't seem to test our (the students) knowledge of the material accurately. Turns simple and easy material into perilously difficult exams for no apparent reason.

Avoid. Attendance is mandatory, but barely anything from the lecture is on any exam. Instead the exams are almost entirely based on the readings, which you do not discuss in class. He basically hates you already and won't answer questions. He just reads his [boring] lecture and you go. I don't understand why he still has his job.

This class is for someone truly want to learn not for anyone just going for the credits. He is highly intelligent but he tents not to break down the material and rather expect you to take time thinking. You have to be open-minded or you learn nothing.

Horrible instructor. Calls students "idiot" and frequently shows his dislike for the entire class. The first two quizes had ok scores, but after that, the average dropped to about 52%. Can't teach, expects people to know everything already.
