Comment:
I thought his 189H class was really interesting. There wasn't textbook reading but rather current events articles that we used to have class discussions. Since it was a politics class, the topics can be controversial but I thought Professor Gruhl did a great job keeping it civil and non-biased (although you could tell he was left-leaning).

John Gruhl is a lecturer, meaning you should show up to class each day. I took two courses with him throughout college and he was one of my favorites to listen to. Not boring stuff, I learned a lot. Tough work and tough grader but well-worth it, passed just fine.

Extremely left leaning. If you are not liberal minded you will not enjoy or get much out of the class.

Overall a really great guy. Gives good feedback on essays and lectures are pretty good. Essays are graded a little more difficult than what I think many people are used to but you'll do fine.

You'll have readings to finish prior to each class. You will also have a new paper over each topic. If you participate, read, use office hours and utilize his feedback on your papers; you'll do fine. He is a tough grader. The final test is essay format. You will be given a variety of topics from the semester, and you choose which ones to write on.

This professor pushes his left-leaning agenda heavily. I had 4 long papers due in the class. The first two I wrote based on my beliefs (primarily right-leaning) and revived Bs. The second two, I wrote based on his beliefs and received As.

Really great professor, and a nice change from other classes. Lectures are captivating and made more interesting with stories that go with the subject. Taking notes and reading the articles is crucial, so is participation. Be sure to check how you're doing with participation multiple times throughout the semester and ask for help if you need it.

He graded pretty hard and I had a c+ pretty much all semester, with almost no background in PolySci outside high school AP. However, participation and Extra Credit saved my life. If i studied a little more, I probably would've done better. Do readings whenever possible

A wonderful man, very approachable and helpful. He expects a lot out of his students, but nothing extreme, and he is happy to help you through any assignment he gives out.

Great Professor and if you're in the honors program I highly recommend taking 198H if he's teaching it. You read a lot of articles and write a few papers, but the main portion of your grade is participation. If you speak up once or twice every class you'll be fine. It's tough to get below a B- or above an A-

Awesome professor but not awesome class. Participation is worth 30% of the grade and the essays are graded very tough. Very tough to get higher than an A- but hard to get below a B. Talk to him a lot because he could be a great professor for recommendation letters.

10/10 Fantastic professor with great lectures. I have taken POLS 227, 198H, & 345 with him and loved all of them. Lots of reading and participation is important. Attendence is highly reccommended. You get test prompts ahead of time to help study and study groups are encouraged. Classes are always interesting and the reading is a bit heavy but good.

Class is well organized and well structured, taught well. Feedback is readily available, detailed, and helpful. Grade is based on four papers, a final and participation in class discussion. A number of articles are assigned every day to be read before class, to start discussion. WARNING: Almost any conservative point of view is sadly lacking.

Dr. Gruhl is that incredibly rare combination of a brilliant mind and an excellent communicator. He is the very ideal of a professor. Mostly based on lecture with some reading. Tests are greenbook essays. By no means an easy course, but if you have an opportunity to take a class with Professor Gruhl, seize it swiftly!

I've taken two political sciences courses from Prof. Gruhl and they have been some of my favorite at UNL. He is a tough but fair grader and spends a lot of time giving feedback on written tests and papers. His lectures are engaging and invite classroom discussion (participation is required!) He is prepared, knowledgeable, kind, respected.

Prof Gruhl is by far my favorite teacher on campus. He is extremely understanding and willing to extend deadlines if you ask him. His grading is a little tough, but that's to be expected in an honors course. If you have the chance I would take this class, it's a very interesting topic and the prof is amazing.

Having taken a 400-level course with Gruhl before, his 200-level coursework seems a lot easier. However, reading and participation are still key. Discussion based class was really fun, but his lectures are still important and interesting. Most of us learned more about government in this class than ever before. He truly cares about students.

My favorite college professor. A class of his steered me away from law school and toward working in politics, which was my real interest anyway. Fantastic teacher.
