It seems like she has done very little to make this class more accessible online. Every lab is set up in quiz format which is very unintuitive, often making you miss points for subjective answers. Be prepared to spend 90% of your lab time on plotting 50+ points on a graph. All interest you may have in astronomy will be destroyed in this class.

Took the G-147 Geology of the National Parks Class. At the beginning of the term, I had issues with the technical sides of the course. Links would not work, information was outdated, and lab questions weren't flexible making them incorrect. Professor is not organized and the course load is insatiable. Search elsewhere or take a different class.

I actually had checked the reviews for professors for this course and chose a different professor that had good reviews. What I didn't know was they combined his and hers and it's clear that Melinda runs the show. She is condescending to the other professor and grades you on your notes. It feels sloppy and like she doesn't care about the material

I've never written one of these before as I never care to, but for my peers I feel obligated, obviously it could be due to all of this covid craziness, but I've never been so repulsed by the energy a teacher puts into a class. It felt like the lunch lady was giving me an apathetic tour of somewhere she couldn't care to be. 0/10 would take again.

This is the worst class I have ever taken. This class has at 4-7 lectures a week each one ends with a quiz. The lectures are not easy to follow. The labs are even worst. I have cried out of frustration over ever lab. This is supposed to be an intro but she acts we should already know everything. All these 1.0 reviews speak the truth.

10 quizzes a week with intense and lengthy lectures. Anytime I asked her questions via email I would get the response of "well if you read it you would know the answer." It is very math-intensive. She is EXTREMELY slow at grading. Wouldn't recommend it -- just take oceanography or meteorology if you need a science for your degree. Somehow got a B??

Professor Hutson assigns soooo much work, even during a pandemic, and expects me to turn it in with zero exceptions for late work. I wanted to take Astronomy because it's interesting, but I don't know how she expects me to actually learn when she assigns this much work. I don't know how I missed the other ratings for her, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS

This professor is a very difficult grader and the labs that she assigns are ridiculous. She requires materials for the course that she does not specify before the class begins including rulers, printers, and specific calculators. She then gets mad at students who do not have her surprise required materials.

Probably the worst teacher I have ever had. There's a ridiculous amount of reading, and event though it was INTRO to Astronomy, she did not teach it like an intro class. The math involved was complicated, and unclear. Weekly labs usually had nothing to do with the 8 lectures and quizzes per week, and take forever. She will dock points for nothing.

Melinda is retired in place. Clearly very smart, but not a good professor. Bad at communication, doesn't explain things clearly, and isn't the most accessible for help. If there is another professor teaching the same class, chances are they are a much better choice than taking it from Melinda.

Took a class taught by Melinda Hutson and Bernadette Rodgers. They alternated grading, but they still took several weeks (up to 4.5 weeks) to grade work. Sometimes they offered "nice job" or "nice work" but mostly they didn't offer constructive feedback. They commented about punctuation and grammar instead of astronomy. A lot of reading & work.

I should have looked her up on here before I took her online course. For a 4 credit class, this is ridiculous. She does not give clear instructions on anything, and then will dock points off for things that she never mentioned. The labs are very unclear and she doesnt teach us how to do them. She does not seem to care that no one understands

I took an online class in which two instructors worked together to teach (Darrell Lim and Melinda Hutson). The class was difficult with as many as 6-7 quizzes a week. The labs were hard and time consuming and more math than I had anticipated. Sometimes I had to infer or deduce the quiz/exam answers because they weren't addressed in the lectures

Super dry course material. Assignments require a base understanding of astronomy even though this is a beginner class. I learned almost nothing and was bored and stressed about this class. Slow grader and gives little or no feedback. Quizzes/exams ask questions not covered in the course materials. Labs are confusing and lack adequate instructions.

Probably the least involved, least helpful teacher I have ever had. Poorly explained assignments, harsh grading criteria, and a lot of math that is far above anything covered in the prerequisites. And the formulas are rarely clearly explained. (If at all.) No partial credit, no late work.

Material was much harder than 100 level. The labs were a mix of physics & high level math with no lecture or direction on how to complete them. The final included material that was not even covered. Weeks into the course we were told the material was just developed by 3 teachers and we were the first to use it. Unfortunate for alot of students

Ive never before given a review on this website, but this teacher was so terrible that it would be a crime not to warn others to steer clear. This teacher doesnt care one bit whether or not you learn the material, and often only uses one hour out of the hour and fifty minuets that you pay for. Obviously bored with the subjects and not helpful.

One of the best teachers I have had for a sci class! She is super nice and caring. I would take another class from her! I passed the class I took from her fall term 2016. The labs were fun and here lectures were super well done! She even posted the lectures online! I could say soo many more good things about her if there wasn't a character limit!

I do not at all recommend selecting this teacher. Her class is a very long, dry, quickly said lecture and once a week you will do a "lab" -some activity from the book that she will not want to help you with at all. If you do take her class be prepared to work in groups, don't skip -she doesn't except late work, and do the study guide for her test.
