I hope you like reading! get ready to read several books in one semester. Dr Jakoby is light hearted and wants you to learn something new. She grades pretty easy. Lecture is interesting with lots of student discussion. At times class can seem childish (passing around a stick to talk) but she means well.

She is an excellent teacher but doesn't have guidelines for assignments and the majority of the work is BS. You need to be very motivated to get an a or a b in this class. However her lectures are amazing and she really expands your mind.

Having a deep interest in her subject would definitely help. I suspect that most philosophy major/minors would find her extremely appealing as a teacher, but if you're just trying to get a feel for college philosophy, a different teacher might be for you. She's extremely fair on due dates and test dates. Unclear on some requirements and lectures.

I really appreciated all the extra help she gave us. The midterm was tough, but she gave us tons of tutoring and even an oral exam to improve our grades. That really helped. Also the class was outside of the box. We really got to see phil from a new perspective. Awesome teacher!

Brilliant professor. She has libraries of books cataloged in her brain. Some people like her and others don't. I think to appreciate her you need a very active interest in philosophy. She's very interested in her students both as learners and as people. I have learned so, so much from her, and am really thankful to have had her as a professor.

Dr. Jakoby belongs in front of a classroom like George Bush belongs in the Oval Office. That shouldn't be hard to interpret how I feel about her. Total waste.

Vera is the reason I declared Phi as one of my two majors...and this class was the best philosophy class I've taken in a long time. The theme of the semester was "evil," so the films we viewed were some of my favorites. To be able to look at them on another level (now) was worth all the work. It was the highlight of my week!

Dr Jakoby is a very nice person who does care about her students. However, her class is not always the most interesting and if you don't have a deep interest in the subject, you will probably be bored and confused.

Comment:
This prof. is hard to understand. She's out in right field & way too loose w/ her "interpretations." Seems more interested in us "finding ourselves", whatever that means, than in our acquiring academic skills & knowledge that we can put to good use. Thank God there's a new prof. in this dept.!
