Comment:
If you don't come to class, don't read the texts, don't make any efforts to learn and study on your own (as you should), you will have a hard time. Otherwise, prof. Furlani is amazing and one of the most caring profs in the department. If you WANT to learn, you will - a lot.

If you're new to literature or need to be repeatedly told exactly what to do don't take a class with Andre. His lectures are brilliant & thought provoking but he won't do a simple synopsis of the assigned reading. His lectures are more parachute style. I try to take every class he teaches. He's genius, genuine & kind, great to talk to outside class

Though it's clear that he genuinely cares for his students he leads them off course when they ask for more clarification or more direction, in order to get good grades. He's a 'freethinker', so he likes to reiterate how "grades don't matter" to him, yet they matter us. He needs to take more responsibility for how his students perform in class.

He is a very nice guy, allows a lot of breathing room when it comes to essays, accepts them if late, and he's funny. But it was hard to follow his lectures, hard to follow what's important to the material and what isn't. Still interesting though, more philosophical at times. He didn't cover all the poems in the syllabus.

Comment:
Like the other rater's have mentioned, his lectures are impossible to follow. Forget it! He's a great guy, probably very nice too, but unless you're obsessed with poetry and like to use convoluted words; avoid like the plague. In addition to that, I attended all but 3 classes, and I'm pretty sure Google will be my best friend for exam prep.

Comment:
This instructor gives lectures randomly. Confusing. Hard to tell what is important and what is not. Nearly impossible to take notes due to this uncertainty. Seems like a tough grader since its hard to tell what are essay's expectations like. TA's are of greater help than the professor. If possible, get someone else, less stress :)

Animated, charismatic, funny, engaging, and really knows what he's talking about. In terms of character, 1 of my favourite profs so far. Lectures are hard to follow... a bit too verbosetangent-prone - asking for clarification will only incite another tangent. Needs to be more concise! Wish he would make lectures available online.

Took a graduate course with Andre in 1999. He was, *bar* none, my best lit prof during time in the grad program at ConU. Passionate, enthusiastic, funny, encouraging, brilliant, well-prepared, and most of all actually *interesting*. It was a course on Modernist Poetics, and helped instill in me a lifelong engagement with the subject.

Comment:
Incredibly disorganized course structure and materials. Follows no rhyme or reason to teaching the class, and goes off on frequent tangents. Only three graded aspects of the course, and with such a haphazard course structure, it is unduly challenging to do better than a B in this course.

Comment:
Professor Furlani's lecture style is like a poorly written essay. It contains a lot of buzz words, and could potentially make good points were it not for its complete lack of focus or adherence to any sort of structure. I presume he's a smart guy, but his teaching is insufferable.

I have NEVER met someone with such an impressive amount of knowledge and such a staggering lack of teaching skills. I DARE you to give him your full attention for an entire 2 hour lecture. His digressions and lack of focus are utterly exhausting to try and follow. I gave up after 30 mins. after 1.5 months I stopped going to class. unbelievably bad

This guy's energy and enthusiasm are through the roof, and I like that. BUT, he does not write notes on the board, does not use powerpoint, does not post resources online, and seems to have a personal issue with explaining concepts in clear, simple, concise language. You have nothing to work with but his lectures, which completely lack focus. AVOID

Yes, this teacher may have a fun personality, but what good can come out of that when he's hard to follow? I've heard numerous students in the class complain over his tangent tendencies. I kid you not, he can't stay on topic. He barely quotes from the texts which makes the class even more frustrating. Avoid at all costs.

If you want to take a class where you're spoon-fed facts and analyses, drop lit, please, and move on to the sciences. Regurgitation is a waste of time and smarts, so why would anyone expect lit profs to adhere to these ridiculous notions. Andre is all over the place, yes, but what he offers makes you think, even after class. This should happen.

Talk about a waste of time. This guy doesn't prep. Proceeds to improv all class about non-related material. Never consults the readings. Wonders why no one has anything to say. Really is clueless about teaching. Puts on fake accents. Mispronounces English words. The nicest most energetic guy who just doesn't know how to educate young minds. FAIL!
