Comment:
Truthfully, the Professor doesn't care about most of his students, but he really likes those who engage in his class and catch on quickly. Despite his apathy to most students, Kaplash was quite good at teaching the subject matter, and related the course content to day to day economic news, which was a great help. Tests are average in difficulty.

Disinterested in majority of students, save his favorites. Doesn't miss a chance to tell students he's not responsible for them understanding basic concepts and don't even think about asking him for help.

Five tests and no final exam which was nice, but have to do well on all five tests to get a good mark because that's all your final mark is based on. You can't email him and don't be late for class either. Interesting stories and interesting material but study lots!

Professor extremely competent. But very theory based. Not for slow or incompetent at theory. Diagrams clear and useful. Be prepared to use textbook as supplemental guide. Again, this professor teaches very quickly but you need to think fast and comprehend your theory. Second mid-term difficult. Final is reasonable. Good luck.

Kaplash was a terrible teacher, didnt know what he was saying and made alot of mistakes. He didnt show up to class for a week and didnt tell any of us, he was sick but he should have had a TA fill in. Class was pointless, didnt learn anything. Midterm 1 was ok. Number 2 and the final extremely hard. If you are at UVIC take econ with Rutherford !!

I dreaded coming to class and having him scribble stuff on the blackboard. His diagrams were messy and his teaching was poor.He did not go over the midterms. The questions on the test rarely had anything to do with what we did in class. In the last week of classes someone said that there was a mistake on the midterm - his was response was "Too bad."

Adorable guy, reminds you of Watson from Sherlock Holmes. Hard class though - he goes too fast sometimes. Doesn't prepare you for exams well.

took an econ class with this prof in my first year and dropped it after the first time I approached him for help. I told him I was having difficulty grasping the course material and his response to me was something like..maybe you should reconsider being here. Then he turned his attention to another student with a big plastic smile on his face. I d

I mean, if you want a Prof who gives decent lectures that are useful but doesnt show up to midterms/finals and does not have office hours or email take this class! Most unhelpful prof I ever had, doesnt care if his students do bad and doesnot hesitate to move kids around, which seems a bit odd to me. Wasted a lot of time fooling with his microphone

Kaplash was inaudible, he had a strong accent and was hard to understand. He drew pointless diagrams on the board without explaining them. The class was pointless, however you can get by alright with the textbook.

He missed alot of classes, but to be fair, it was because of reasonable situations. Don't really need to attend to pass. Reading the text is a huge part. Uses real world examples which helps. Not a bad teacher, but not the most helpful

The first midterm is fair, the second midterm is very hard, and many students failed the second midterm. But the final is fair. Do the study guide questions before the exams. He seems like a nice guy, but the second midterm is hard.

Fairly interesting lectures but can gain same knowledge from textbook if necessary. Didn't mark or grade the tests so knowledge from class is less important than knowledge from labs.

To get the most out of lecture: (1) Pre-read material to be covered in lecture. (2) Bring text to class so you can follow along (v. important for his teaching style - is them most important thing to do IMO!).(3) Most of the time, don't bother drawing graphs. Focus and take notes on what he says - use study guide if you need practice questions.

Hmm...the second midterm was pretty bad. I got 60%, about 29% lower than my mark for the first midterm. The problem wasn't so much that the material was harder, but the questions in the exam were laid out differently than how they were in the assigned text and study guide questions. LAME

Midterms and exam are conpletely different to in class material covered. doesnt even write his own tests, or mark them. doesnt believe in scaling when extremely necessary. writes on his syllabus, "Do not email me". if i had just read the text rather than going to all classes, i would have gotten a better mark

he is easy to listen to in the lectures, however the lectures seemed unrealated to the tests...first midterm wasn't bad...second midterm over 40% of the class failed and it was NOT scaled...he didn't seem to care about how upset the students were..
