I loved Richard Blanke and consider him one of the best professors I have worked with. I took several classes with him and the only time I did poorly was a semester when I had him after lunch and skipped a bunch of classes. I worked on my senior thesis with him on totalitarianism and would recommend him to anyone who cares about European history.

Is one of the smuggest men I have ever met. I tried going in for help multiple times, but he never really had any feedback besides nodding, and in a roundabout way saying that I needed to do more individual research. He is retiring this year, and good riddance. I worked my ASS off for B in his class, and it was the first B I ever got.

Dr. Blanke is tough on knowledge but is very fair. Great Dry Humor and Entertaining lectures. Blanke has no favorites. His class objectives are spelled out at the start of the semester and he does a great job dictating them. If you love Modern European History he is your guy. He grades fairly and you need to earn your A with him. Worth the Risk!!

Good class, Very Interesting and extremely informative. For exams, he gives you people to read up on, but you don't have to; just find them in the book and read the synopsis of their passage to get the gist of it. Easiest exams I've written in college.

The key is to write down everything he sais, which is easy cause he talks slow enough, and study just notes for exams and you will definately get a good grade. Just memorize the notes.

Yea, he's very dry, stodgy, and he does talk like Tom Brokaw, but he's pretty awesome cuz of it. He's kind of hilarious actually, an acquired taste though. That aside, he knows his stuff inside and out, will meet with you after class if you wish, but won't hold your hand. The material is always so goddamn interesting though.

He knows his stuff, but he doesn't teach it well. He needs to take some classes on how to teach...and how to accept that it's okay for students to have disagree with him. I was bored out of my mind during lectures and I couldn't follow what he was saying most of the time. The only reason I did well was because of extensive note taking.

The class is what you make of it. Budget the reading on a daily basis and keep up with it, and you'll learn a ton and do very well. Don't do the reading and you'll end up with a C. Books are kind of dry, but they make sense if you keep pace with the lectures. Class is same format as the class below, but with a book on Eastern Europe thrown in.

Incredibly knowledgable, though not the greatest speaker. You'll learn a lot in this class, though don't expect it to be easy. Class is heavy on reading. Tests are short answer and essay. There's also a separate essay of your choice of topic due near the end of the semester. It's not as tough as it seems. Overall, not a bad teacher or class.

I like history, but this guy almost ruined it for me. He obviously doesn't like students. Whenever anyone would disagree with him he would treate them like they were an idiot. The text was also awful. It's not bad to take a class with him...just don't expect much help or understanding.

Incredibly smart, great (though dry) sense of humor. Gives interesting lectures, tests actually cover the important stuff, but can be rough. Great if you want to learn, a nightmare if you want to slack off.

Really funny. Gets distracted easily by people talking/sleeping. Once distracted it takes awhile for him to get back on track. Goes off on tangents. Tests aren't that hard if you study (multiple choice, 1 essay, map). The TA was awesome too!

Ok, wow. No one can understand his lectures. He mumbles too much, & says um at least 456 times before the class is over. The slides don't help; he thinks they do though. He speaks his own language. I had Garner for a TA though, & she is awesome. If it wasn't for her I would have failed. She taught his class once,& it was so interesting and helpful.

So I don't want to be to judgmental. But honestly if you are in the class...GET OUT!!! The guy is smart yes, I think he knows his stuff the problem is he can't talk. His favorite word is "um" and he goes off on tangents.Plus he hugs himself all the time, and occasionally rocks back and forth. He needs to take a public speaking class really badly.

Excellent professor. By far my favorite at UMaine. Interesting lecturer who is very knowledgable on the subject matter, and kind of amusing to watch during lecture too, in a good way. Tests were pretty good and essays graded very fairly. Take this man's classes if you can!

Excellent professor. Knows a lot about the subject and gives an interesting lecture. He does say "um" a LOT, but you can usually get past that pretty easily. Take classes with him if you can.
