Comment:
First genuine history class in college and I loved it. I am biased b/c I love military history stake that for what it's worth, Dr. Miller is very thorough and covers an enormous amount of time in one semester. Very little on the PowerPoints, so go to class & take good notes. He is always willing to meet with students if you're struggling.

I have already had a high opinion of Dr Miller when I had him in HTY279 so I jumped at the chance to take a class with him where he is one of the best American historians for the class subject, South Africa, this is a course that covers 400 years of history in 1 semester so go to every class. If you take good notes from his lectures, you'll be fine

The lecture consists of him rambling on for 50 minutes, powerpoint are helpful so you're taking notes on everything. Then the study guide is ID's and essay questions. I only go to class for attendance now. Gives a book to read and a horrible written prompt and gives a week at best for a 2 page paper. Leaves all work to TA's.

One of the best history teachers I have had. Clear voice, speaks slow so you can get important notes down. Gives you time to get stuff in, and only three tests for the semester. He can be pretty funny sometimes as well.

PROS: He really knows his history. He is always prepared for class and usually has tests and papers returned within one week. CONS: His map tests are unfair and he is hard to approach.

Miller is a really nice guy and although his study guides for the test are extremely long, and he only ends up using about a 10th of it on the actual exam, his class is worth it. Instead of writing out all his lectures on a huge powerpoint, he has pictures which really helps for visual learners. Take this class with him!

He's certainly not easy but his classes are really interesting and straight forward. He let's you know exactly what he expects from you on papers and exams, so as long as you do the work and study you should be all set.

It is true Miller is not easy, but he is fair. He doesn't baby the class, but he is there to help. You have to work to do well. If you do, you will learn a ton. He knows what he is talking about.

Really really hard to take lecture notes, be prepared to spend the entire lecture frantically writing things down. Tests are of average difficulty if you put in a lot of study time beforehand...

Difficult to take good notes in his class, He stands at the front of the room and just talks, and you have to be able to keep up. If you don't like writing, then don't take a class with Miller. Your grade will primarily be composed of about 5 papers, and 3 tests (most of which are essay).
