Comment:
the material for this class is very hard to grasp. The class is made up of 5 discussion, 2 papers and 2 tests. If you do bad on on test its really hard to bounce back. He replies to emails really late and seems to forget sometimes. Grades very slow as well. However he is understanding when it comes to giving extra credit. Dont recommend

Took fully online & asynchronous, Prof is a really nice and understanding man, but the course material is hard to grasp. There are only four tests and a group paper that make up the entire semester grade, and the tests frequently have questions that arent covered at all. Even with open notes, powerpoints, and study guides, I struggled. No lectures.

I took this as a fully online class, there was no weekly homework or zoom calls, but every week or two he would assign a chapter reading from the textbook. TAKE NOTES & READ THE TEXTBOOK. There are only 5 grades in the grade book - 4 exams and a final paper. If you do not take notes and stay up to date on the textbook you will not pass this class.

This class will absolutely put you right to sleep, but if you can manage to stay awake and take notes on a google doc, you've basically passed the class. Exams were open note so if you know how to use ctrl+f you made an A. Group projects were okay but our TA graded like his life depended on taking points off, - points for color choice on a PP....

Class consisted of very long, usually boring lectures. Overall nice professor, but heavily relies of lectures. Powerpoints online but they are better explained in person. 2 group projects. Tests are online. Decent study guides provided by TA.

This class is very test heavy. You only have four test grades and one semester paper. Lectures every class and very boring. The test questions are general questions of the topics on the lectures, comparisons, along with question based on his personal opinion on historical events. I would suggest doing the extra credit, helps a lot. Not a hard class

Do not. I repeat do not join the TA team for this class. I thought it would be a great idea and would save me a bit of time because you dont have to do the group projects, but it caused me more stress than just doing the projects did. Lectures were long, and he went off topic many times. Questionable comments and actions on occasion.

Worst professor I have ever had at UNCC. I am normally a straight A student but this class ended that streak. Do not take a course with this professor if you want to keep your sanity. He is so boring and never stops talking. He lets students grade the group projects, his test averages were all failing, unorganized, horrible assignments.

As someone on the TA team for this class, I heavily do not recommend it. Besides his boring demeanor for an interesting subject, he is EXTREMELY vague and unclear with directions. The subject material is not hard, however, the way he formats it is atrocious. It's like everything he says or produces comes out in essay format when it could be simple.

The class always has an hour minimum lecture and he is super monotone and boring. Super difficult to stay focused on him. Final grade consists of 4 tests and 2 group projects. However all the tests are take home tests and the powerpoints are up on canvas.

Spoke about his opinions for 1.5 hours non stop. We had 4 assignments. The paper,40% of grade, had a vague/unclear rubric. Every class his expectations of the paper changed. He never posted grades to canvas. The only grades i ever got back were 3 via email of which were 80,87 and 90. Never got my grades back and I ended with a C somehow. Worst prof

This class was easy, but not fun. It was boring and I often didnt want to go but he takes attendance almost every class and it counts. Reading textbook helps for test but is not required for any assignments. His TA does a lot of the work.

Phil Rutledge comes to class and spews his option for the entire 75 minute class. Although I agree with him on most issues he is extremely biased and repetitive. You are allowed 5 absences and on the 6th one you lose 10% off your final grade which I think is fair. All the tests are easy and online. Not a single person listens to the lectures.

I think Professor Rutledge is a nice person, but his lectures are extremely monotonous, and I often found I did not get much out of them. Grade is dependent on three exams and two group projects. He just wasn't that effective for me. I would not suggest if you do not like group projects or straight lectures.

I'm not sure why he has such bad ratings, because hes a nice professor and the tests are easy. His lectures can be kind of boring if sociology isn't your thing. The TA is useless though he doesn't grade by the rubric.

He likes to go off about random topics that have nothing to do with the presentation. Very boring. Teacher assistants seem useless.

This is the most boring class I've taken. Rutledge just talks THE ENTIRE TIME and ties the PowerPoint into pointless examples that make no sense. Tests are online and you can pull up the PowerPoints so it's easy to make an A. He actually cares about sociology a lot, it's just not engaging and he's really monotone. TA team does everything for him.

This professor was the worst. He is so monotone. I had to work really hard in his class, reading the textbook. He also liked to push his own political agenda. Will not take him as a professor again.

Comment:
This is an unfortunate situation. The material is very interesting and if you actually learn it, you would have a great basic but broad understanding of sociology. However, he just stands up there and reads the powerpoint and connects random examples to it. Very monotone. The set up could be more engaging. He didn't even tell us what to study.
