Dr. Hulme is hard. Very hard. Daily quizzes, rough exams, rough WP/Map quizzes, and even tougher essay questions but hes a really great professor. His lectures make things easy to understand, hes always willing to help, and he truly does care about his students. If you read and listen, and study, youll be fine.

Take his Boston Spring term if you can. He's not in Model UN mode, and is relaxed and helpful during it. You do a ton of research, but you get the rest of the time to explore Boston with the class. You spend about 10 days in Boston, and the rest of the time is on-campus working on the paper. Paper is long, so make sure to work extensively on it.

He assigns up to 50 pages of reading each class and quizzes on it. He thinks his class is the most important class or thing in your life. He canceled class because of a conference and gave us a mandatory make up class at 7:30 in the morning. He did this knowing that there are no possible conflicting classes at that time. It was a jerk move.

Gives daily quizzes so doing the reading is a must. Overall very interesting class and learned a lot. Participation always helps--don't be afraid to participate or ask a question. About a 10 page paper due at the end of the course so it's better if you can start thinking about a topic early and consult with him about it. Homework is time consuming!

DH is, in one word, influential on his students. He commits to their education and to their success and truly cares about their level of knowledge, which is why he's such a difficult grader. ANY class taken with him can be expected to be a lot of work (I've taken numerous at all levels) but will you learn about the world around you? Hell yes.

Dr. Hulme is an amazing professor who has given me so much inspiration and guidance. He will challenge you to do things completely out of your comfort zone that will be the toughest thing you ever do, but it is worth it. He will change your life.

MUN is literally the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. If you are not up to researching day in and day out, don't take this class. You have to give speeches every class and conference is terrible because he is always jumping down your throat. Once the team wins though, he is the nicest man and he will inspire you to do great things.

You have at least 50 pages of reading per night and daily quizzes. You need to be avidly taking notes during class because while what he talks about is interesting, you need to know everything for the exam. I studied 20 hours for the final and only got a BC. There are map quizzes and current events quizzes from the Christian Science Monitor too.

Dr. Hulme is very invested in the education of his students. His class is difficult but he really dedicates his time to helping students work through any problems. Instead of making the class easier, he focuses on preparing his students on the topics at hand.

Dr. Hulme is an incredible professor. Although he assigns a lot of homework and his tests are ridiculously hard, he is one of those professors who really cares about ALL his students, and grades them on effort. He is willing to come in extra early or stay late if you need extra help in his class. Study hard and you'll do well.

Dr Hulme is a really great professor. While he does act like a politician, that is his area of study so it is understandable. He is very helpful and instead of gives you answers he asks you all the right questions to get you to find the answer. Great person, big heart, and has a lot of scholarship/internship info on hand.

One of the few profs at Alma that hasn't succumbed to grade inflation. It's absolutely possible to do well but you'll have to work for it! As a grad student I'm thankful that he actually pushed me to be a better writer and have greater understanding of things rather than letting me coast. Also feel he's harder on the UN kids w/ higher expectations.

He does NOT just teach to Model UN students, I would give this teacher an A plus. It may be difficult, but if you want to learn and do well then do what he asks, listen and take notes in class, and go to office hours. It's pretty simple. The subjects he teaches are not outdated but modern and very interesting. Highly recommend for non-UNers!

He can be very intense and he expects a lot out of his students. This is not a class slacking off. It may seem as though he favors UN students but he's actually very fair. Non-UN students should know all you have to do is take the time to talk to him so he knows who you are. When UNers are dominating his office hours, just ask to cut in line.

He is very intelligent in his field. However, if you do not have previous interest in the material it is very hard to do well in this class. He is rarely in his office, but to do well you MUST see him at office hours. If you put in extra effort he will notice. Yes, he tries to help UNers a lot, but if you try to put in effort, it will not backfire.

Comment:
I am actually interested in the material, and I did well in this class, but I do have to say he has the single most irritating voice in class, and that the class was definitely not designed to HELP students get engaged in the issues. If you are not already interested, this is not the class for you. I think that is kind of a shame, actually.
