Comment:
Really enjoyed Professor Estess class. He was articulate, clear, concise, and considerate. He allowed for an ample amount of class discussion and lectures werent heavy or boring. People who complain about reading too much probably shouldnt have come to college, let alone take an upper-division history course. All historians do is read and write.

No laptop allowed; does not give specific paper feed back; keeps track of attendance in notebook; essay finals; 2/3 take home papers; says "mm-mhm" a lot; has a fit if catches you with cell phone; need to read texts and take notes to pass/do-well on essays and test. 6/21/2017 is accurate in what they say.

I would avoid taking this class with this professor. He's not friendly, His papers are hard, and there is so much reading to do. This class should be offered online, and if you don't participate in class, he'll ask you to see him. He didn't allow computers in class, also he should change the final to be a take home exam.

Tough grader and definitely makes you think. He teaches Jeffersonian era, so if you don't have a background in it, pick someone else.

Avoid contact! His grading scale is harsh and an excessive amount of reading is required. Class participation is a large chunk of your grade so books must be read. Also, he assigned a book that he wrote! The book was of no aid to papers.Pointless.Paper topics were worded more complicated than necessary and his knowledge and lectures are mediocre.

He is actually a pretty good history teacher, he made his lectures very remember able which has helped me have a better understanding of history. Hes really strict with his rules and some are dumb like no computers in class. but i liked the essay tests instead of multiple choice, graded midterms too harshly for a 100 level class.

I currently have Professor Estes for HST 114. Before I chose this class I didn't have much interest in History and have never really done well in it. Professor Estes completely changed my mind about history! His lectures are so easy to understand if you take notes the whole lecture you'll be fine! Great Professor.

Professor Estes killed whatever interest I had in history. Almost no help at all, I saw him once a week and he always took a non-biased opinion and never actually helped me. If you want to talk to a wall, take his class.

Comment:
All HST 300 classes are difficult, no matter the professor. However, some professors are more helpful, especially with regard to communication/advice. Dr. Estes does not communicate well with students. Emphasis on students. I went to his office multiple times for help and advice, but got nowhere fast. Seek help elsewhere and you'll be fine!

He's a sweetheart but he thinks "repetition is the essence of teaching." It was like being put in a high-chair and fed bite-sized spoonfuls of pureed American history. I didn't feel challenged or motivated. I never read a single book for the class and still got a B. What was the point?

Heavy on books. Class discussions are dependent on the readings and participation is a part of your grade. There are 4 essays that make up your grade, 3 of which are take home.

If you show up to every class everyday and take good notes you'll do fine. His class definitely wasn't an easy A, you really have to do your work both in class and outside of class. All his assignments are essays, which if you have a lot of notes will be easy to write. He always lectures so sometimes it can be hard to pay attention.

Prof. Estes is one of the top 3 professors I've had at Oakland. His class isn't a blow-off, but if you do what he asks of you, you will come away so satisfied with what you've learned. He's very friendly and professional. If you don't like doing a bit of work, he's not for you. But if you are willing to put forth some effort, you can't go wrong.

Awesome prof! Had the pleasure of being in his HST 114 Fall 2009 and absolutely loved it. Three 1pg papers, one 3 page paper and a final, how much easier could it get? You have to keep up with the readings though. Great class discussions, involves the class in discussion and debate. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED TO ALL!!!

Excellent teacher in upper level courses. 114 & 115 students are too immature to comprehend COLLEGE level history. He is the reason I became a history teacher. I have utter respect for his intellect. He pushed me harder than anyone else (English major and still only got 3.2's on his papers - and he thought that was GOOD!). Excellent professor.

Is the best professor I've had throughout college. I have had 5 classes with him and enjoyed each one. Fair grader (which means you actually have to read) and always available for help outside of class. And to the person below who hates him, if you have 2 degrees and 7 years of college, why are you still in a 100 level class?? Overall awesome prof!
