He is a genius in all that he teaches and shows true intelligence by lecturing from memory. He doesn't test over anything that he hasn't spoken about. The only questions that bother him are stupid ones that regard extending a test because you didn't study. He's been my favorite professor out of all I've had here and I'm a senior.

He has a brilliant mind and lectures with only a list of ID's to go from. The lectures are very informative and very captivating and I'm not worried about information being inaccurate.

yo - look at the reviews from 10 years ago. This guy was ancient then. Very hard of hearing and mumbles. I recommend you know CPR cuz hes going to drop in his tracks. (Gets sooooooo pissed off if you ask a question)

He seems very knowledgeable about the subject but I think he assumes that everyone has previous knowledge. He often tries to make jokes or references to U.S. politics. He rambles on and sometimes deters from subjects in a mostly monotone voice. I did not get anything from his lectures. I would just wait to get the study guide and teach myself.

He has a great passion for jazz, but the class wasn't that great. He's ancient and his lecture method shows it. One good thing about the class is that he shows interesting videos sometimes.

While I agree with everyone that this guy knows everything about ancient greece his teaching method is about 50 years outdated. Professors that sit and stare at the back of the wall while recalling events that happened 2000 years ago are awful. If he could just get the class more involved he would be a great teacher but I dont see that happening.

He is very unclear and skips around decades at a time. He assumes everyone has a vast background knowledge of Greek history when in reality I only know what he is talking about half of the time. He's really old and I think it is about time he retires. Thankfully, he provides a study guide before the test, so I can teach myself everything.

Jay Bregman is the best of both worlds, a highly intelligent academic, and a wacked-out jazz musician. Endlessly entertaining. Take his Jazz History class!

I was SO thankful for our TA in this class. Bregman knows his stuff, but he rambles through every lecture and I'm never sure what's important and what's not. He's obviously brilliant, but very unclear. Not a difficult class if you have a good TA and don't mind boring lectures.

****asively knowledgeable about the ancient world, lectures added significantly to the texts. Has a sharp sense of humor that you can miss if you are not. Best professor I've yet had.

Bregman knows his stuff, unfortunately he isn't clear with it. He is a somewhat unclear lecturer and it's never clear whether he's rambling or actually lecturing. Pay very close attention to what he says. He didn't exactly care for questions, but he made some funny comments. Easy exams if you pay attention, and the final paper isn't bad either.

Lectures are difficult to follow and he'll rarely clarify them, even if questions are asked. Seems very bored with the subject matter, although I've heard his HTY 484 is amazing. He's got a very dry sense of humor that occasionally livens up the class. Overall, not a bad teacher, though I wouldn't recommend him for HTY 105.

Not worth taking. Professor is a cranky old man who doesnt teach, just mumbles and yells when questions are asked. Exams far more difficult than similar classes, and grades lower/more strict. Would not take another class with this professor.

Warning, this class was TERRIBLE. The subject matter had so much potential, but was turned into a bland political course. The tests did not match up with the study guides given, the grading was absurdly harsh, and the professor seemed annoyed at having to teach at all. Difficult class + professor who doesnt want to be there = not worth your time.

Loved History of Jazz. Bregman's so into it and it rubs off on you. Much of class is just listening to music or watching videos. Tests are easy for 400-level, though a bit odd to prepare for. Assigned one paper, some people wrote 20+ pages, I wrote 5 and got an A. Don't over exert yourself, just sit back and enjoy the music.

This guy is older then GOD!! Its hard to understand his lectures, he mumbles alot. His tests are kinda hard. Its very hard to follow his lectures through all his mumbling and he seems to be a jerk when you ask questions, seems like he's yelling at you. Yet he does know his history very well. If you can follow what hes saying, you'll learn alot.

Comment:
He expects you to get the work (mostly readings) he assigns done, without reminders from him- but this should be expected in upper-level classes. He's very smart and although there's some mumbling, as long as you keep up in the readings, you'll be fine.
