He definitely makes you work for your grade, that's for certain. Be ready for DETAILS. Many students find that his class is the wake-up call that this isn't high school anymore. However, if by the end of the semester you still aren't prepared for his tests, you have only yourself to blame.

If there's a way to avoid this class, do so, take PChem, take Immuno, whatever you gotta do, This man knows nothing about Biology or Science in general, and his lectures consist of outdated, often inaccurate, information which you must memorize verbatim, His preoccupation with diarrhea is strange, and even a bit disturbing Good Luck,

The class was very interesting, however, if you are unable to memorize every single word verbatim, this class will be very difficult. Don't study last minute. Study every day leading up to the exam, and you'll do well. Smith is condescending, so I wouldn't recommend asking him any questions.

Took the class over the summer and it was ridiculously hard. It is possible to memorize information but it is seriously impossible to memorize all that he gives you! It is wayyyy too much, it might be a better class to take throughout the year as you have more time to memorize in between exams

Great professor! Lectures are interesting and you learn a lot of concepts and how they link together. If you go to class, take good notes, and study a few days in advance then this class is an easy A. He's very helpful, straightforward, and a nice man! I wish he taught more upperlevel courses.

A lot of time and work=A.I got an A-, so an A is very possible. The material is interesting, but I personally do not like how he teaches: straight memorization of EVERY word of lecture and then regurgitation for the exam. He will answer questions but can be very condescending, discouraging, and sometimes doesn't even answer your question.

Not too hard of a class. Gives a lot of information in lecture, so make you take good notes. He expects you to know every little detail for his exams, but if you keep up with the meterial and don't cram it in a couple nights before the test, there's no reason why you can't get an A. Also gives easy quizzes/projects to help boost your grade

I took his microbiology class over the summer and it was hell. The average student should dedicate at least 2-3 hours a day to studying IF all nighters aren't your thing. Use the textbook ONLY for the information he asks for each reading, aside from that its straight lecture memorization. By far the hardest class I've ever taken yet. Good teacher.

Wow I never had a teacher that knew my major is chemistry but yet spent a whole 2 class lecture talking about protons neutrons and electrons in the most basic sense... If you like a professor that can take a 2 slide powerpoint and run with it for 3hours then that is SMITH! Beware he will put u to sleep, tired or not.

For the tests, you literally have to know every detail from the notes. LITERALLY EVERY DETAIL. but it is DEFINATELY do-able. i was never that great at memorizing and STILL pulled off an A-. you just have to sit and memorize and read and reread and rememorize over and over. he always puts a 5% curve and a decent amount of times curves even more

He is a great guy, but an extremely tough professor. You are expected to know everything for his exams! If you have a photogenic memory or have a great memory then you will be fine. But if you are like me then the only way to get a B is to study from day 1 and learn and study everyday. Go over notes as much as possible.

He has outlines posted on Angel that he uses during his classes to cover the material. What he says during his lectures is EXACTLY what is on the exams. You need to know his notes inside and out. The textbook is used for select readings that he tells you before hand and for several projects. He's quite the character. Nonetheless, his class is worth

Tape record his lectures, write down the notes carefully, and memorize them for the exam. He also has reading assignments from the textbook that are on the exam, but you can get those from an upperclassmen.

If you study hard, you'll be fine. Exams are straight from the notes. Don't cram the night before, because that doesn't help, especially in 2nd semester.
