Comment:
Can tell she cares about students and knows content to an extent. But tests are completely recall and content heavy (super detailed). Reading assignments could be 100 pages a night. Lectures were not organized and it was hard to take notes.

She grades papers low at the beginning of the class and then high at the end, literally as a rule, just so she can say that she taught you how to write better.

Comment:
Extremely emotionally damaging professor. Puts on a front of caring about her students but is ultimately most concerned with demonstrating her own superiority. Its shameful for Hope College honestly. She will completely tear apart your writing and make jabs at you as a person with almost no actual grounds.

Professor Dykstra is a wonderful professor. She is a very tough grader on papers but she will help you and you will grow as a writer. She is one of the most caring and compassionate people I have met at college yet.

Comment:
Since I did well on the smaller assignments, I assumed I would be fine on the essays. Don't make that mistake. Come to class every day and take full advantage of the smaller assignments in order to make up for the points you will inevitably lose on the essays. She is tough, but she is not impossible. She doesn't force you to think as she does.

Comment:
She is a smart lady, but if she doesn't like you you'll know. Very picky and if you don't use exactly her style of writing she say's it's wrong, even if it's grammatically correct. Comments on papers after they are turned in are rude and totally different from what she talks to you about in workshops. Very rude and a harsh grader, but can be nice.

Dykstra amazes me (in a horrible way). Extremely opinionated and a shame she is still on staff. Try your best to keep your personal life to yourself as she will most likely find something about you she doesn't like. Once that happens, you are screwed. After a few weeks it is pretty clear which of the students she likes and which ones she doesn't.

Prof. Dykstra has cares about teaching and students. Her written comments can be unclear, and she is a hard grader, but is more than willing to help all students improve their writing throughout the semester. Her office hours were very valuable. Definitely recommended.

Good professor. The other comments are not fair. She works hard to grade your papers and helped me to become a better writer. She is liberal, but if you can't deal with liberal professors don't go to college. She also cared about my well being as a person.

This professor is an adamant socialist & feminist and will give "A's" to anyone who share's her opinion. She uses class discussion to persuade you to share her political viewpoints

In no world should this woman be given freshman to teach. If she disagrees with you on anything she immediately disenfranchises you. If she likes you then you will be fine. Get on her bad side (basically includes being involved in sports or the Pull, she hates the Pull) and you can kiss you backside goodbye. She should be under review ASAP!

This professor has made two of my classmates cry, one of them on multiple occasions. She very obviously plays favorites, and is not open to views other than her own. For example, you are wrong if you dont agree with her. She is by far the worst professor I have had since being at hope college and will avoid her AT ALL COSTS in the future.

You might like this class if she likes you. But if she doesn't like you, you'll know it. She singles people out during class and talks about how their answers are wrong and bascially how stupid you are, I would avoid this professor if possible.

Natalie is a very passionate teacher and really loves her field of study. Come prepared to learn and do your work, though it isn't too hard and she gives you a clear syllabus so you know what's coming. Talk lots during discussion; she likes to hear student reactions to what you read.

Comment:
Class with Natalie is great if she likes you. If she doesn't have time for you or you don't meet her level of expectation, she will not only let you know, but she'll make you feel like an idiot. She is a very good teacher, but not a very compassionate or patient person.
