Very easy class in terms of workload. Pretty easy class in terms of grading. A single hour's lecture probably included all of the following: brilliant descriptions of some things; unexplained references to stuff non-history buffs don't know; rambling asides on baseball or politics. Nice guy (unless he thinks you're an idiot).

Comment:
THE single worst professor that I have had in my two years at this University. His lectures are not cohesive and he talked about everything other than what the course was supposed to be about. Insanely harsh grader. He legitimately yelled at students in my class for "excessively drinking water." DO NOT TAKE He is judgemental and ridicules students.

He is very knowledgeable, and expects a lot from his students. His lectures are organized and cohesive, but he doesn't write anything down so take notes nonstop from the second he begins talking. Read the textbook to fill in things that don't make sense but he highlights key points in class so plan on attending every one. Grade consists of 3 exams.

Worst class I have ever taken at UD. Terrible experience did not like this mans method of teaching whatsoever. Just stands in front of the class and rambles on for 50 minutes. Also, if you try to follow along with the book he has an issue with that during class. Smart man just should not be teaching. Terrible.

Prof. Bernstein is extremely knowledgable, but expects freshmen to be able to perform the same level of analysis after reading philosophers that he can. He can be funny at times, but I suppose can rub students the wrong way. He's very picky ab using proper grammar, but if your essays are well-formulated, grammar issues won't bring your grade down.

Comment:
Professor Bernstein teaches by asking Socratic questions: probing and often complexly phrased. As an introvert who certainly did not have an auditory learning style, it was difficult and stressful. Two 5-pagers, one 10-pager. No notes, no projector. Colloquium theme was "political philosophy," lots of theoretical discussion. Makes you think hard.

Comment:
Bernstein has great lectures. He gives way more background information than is in the textbook and really pieces all the major ideas of the history together to form a coherent narrative. Very tough grader. Mentions being Jewish a lot (where it often doesn't apply). But overall solid professor.

One of the worst teachers I've had. Openly admits he doesn't follow the textbook, doesn't use slides and doesn't have a paper outline to follow while he lectures. The test is on whatever he says and he tends to drone on, skip around different years and is quite boring. He's nice enough as a person but he's past his prime when it comes to teaching.

While the class is not for everyone, I think Professor Bernstein is a fantastic lecturer and teacher, we often spoke politics in the morning before class together. Only three grades for the entire class, but he is willing to ditch the first grade if the last two are improved, definitely study and take detailed notes. I had three full pages a class.

Never take a class with him as the professor. He is not helpful at all, gives no notes, and just rambles the entire class. He spends more time bashing conservatives than he spends giving helpful information. You never know what he will put on the exam, and you will most likely do horribly on the exam.

He doesn't give any homework, but thats no reason to take the class. He takes points off on the tests as he pleases. He also does not give notes, but expects you to get everything he says. If you stop paying attention for even one minute, you're going to get lost and miss a ton of notes. He does not give out study guides.

Second time I've had Bernstein. HIST 268 is a writing class. If you're a decentgood writer, most of his criticism will be grammatical. Feedback is almost entirely constructive and he cares about his students succeeding. Interesting to talk to when meeting in office. Argument MUST be solid to get a good grade, considers quiz score in final grade.

I didn't like how he did his lectured. They seemed a bit unorganized and it was difficult to figure out what needed to be written. I worked at it, and ended up getting a B+ in the class with good note taking and studying. I rarely read the book at all. A bit difficult, but manageable.

Extremely knowledgable about the topic, but rants forever about obscure references that have nothing to do with the class and treats every student like a fellow PhD of European history. Also made a few r.a.p.e jokes that made everyone feel pretty awkward.

Bernstein is incredibly smart but his lectures can be hard to decipher. He actually expects you to do work. One 2 page paper (second writing requirement), a midterm, one 8-10 page term paper, and a final. If you can pay attention and type fast, you'll be able to catch most of what he says and sort through it all later.

John Bernstein is a very very knowladgable man.He comes to class with literally nothing, no powerpoint, no overhead, nothing. He speaks for 50 minutes straight and whatever notes you collect is what you get.The textbook is a must, and must be read, its easier if you bring the book to class to follow along. 3 test all year, much emphasis on the final

Save yourself! While the second-writing requirement for this class was a mere ungraded two page reaction paper, the class was not worth it. He goes on rants that never seem to end and never answer his point. He began a sentence once with "Science is..." and then went on a tangent and never told us what science is. Also, it's more an English class.

I had him twice (268 and 102) and both classes were great. He is very knowledgable about history and it seems like he knows everything. He is a very tough grader in 268, but it really helps you improve your writing. In 102 your grade is basically your final so if you get an A on it you get an A. He is still extremely tough, but you learn A LOT

Professor Bernstein's knowledge is encyclopedic and his lectures are eloquent. Grades are based on a midterm, final, and paper. He is a very generous grader in that he weighs whichever exam grade is higher. If your writing is lacking, he will be sure to let you know. I very much enjoyed this course and highly recommend it.
