If you truly want to learn, you will enjoy professor Patterson. Class time isn't passive, and you MUST be prepared. If you pay attention in class you won't have any trouble on the essays or tests. His methods are rigorous, but if you make it through you will have a solid understanding of the material.

Patterson is impossible to understand at the beginning, but you get used to him. Calls on people randomly, so do the reading. Only cover about 5 pages each class, but he will ask you to read way ahead. I would advise against this. You will usually be able to anticipate what you need to read. 3 essays & about 4 tests. Requires effort, but is doable.

Some use of the socratic method, but it's mostly regurgitating EVERYTHING from the textbook. Still, you do learn a lot. The exams & papers are challenging, but certainly doable. Favors students who already know a lot about ancient/medieval Europe, know Latin, and apparently have the time to memorize the textbook.

This was a very challenging course. We started out with 20 honors students, and 8 dropped out within 3 weeks. Big on the Socratic method, which sometimes makes things disorganized. You absolutely need to read the book and memorize LOTS of dates to succeed in the class.

WOW Patterson was a great professor, but expects a whole lot. You seriously have to read the book, and that killed me the first half of the semester. He will call on people at random, so always be prepared. He grades for participation, is lenient on tests but HARD on essays. He does have favorites though, so impress him from the get-go. I didn't.

This class requires a lot of work, but it's worth it. The first few weeks of class are pretty heavily centered around the Bible, but don't let that scare you off; it gets better. He seems intimidating in class, but go by and talk to him. He's approachable and it WILL help your grade. I learned more in Patterson's class than any other class.

I signed up for this class looking for a challenge but was disappointed--what I got was a semester of endless memorization and redundant class discussions. Not at all clear on what he expects in essays. He will give comments and let you edit before turning them in, but beware, you can do everything he says and still not make an A.

Rumored to be a ridiculously tough course. NOT TRUE. If you can write a good essay (and use LOTS OF FACTS) then you're fine as there are only tests, which are all essays, and papers. Very amusing teacher, somewhat of a stickler on redundant dates and names but still interesting. Seems to somewhat grade on how much he likes you, but he's fair.

Dr. Patterson appreciates students' interest in the subject and grades partially on how well a student conveys that interest (ie Socratic method). I looked forward to his class everyday and enjoyed listening to him speak. I can only imagine a students' frustration if he/she wanted to simply go through the motions. He is an unforgettable teacher

Fantastic Professor. This class wasn't as challenging as some people say but it was certainly no walk in the park. If you know how to write essays (for the tests) and are interested in history then I would certainly recommend this professor and this class.

Patterson is OLD SCHOOL. He uses everyone's last name. The entire class is nothing but questions, so get used to looking stupid. He knows EVERYTHING and he expects you to as well. He always has office hours and he likes you to go and talk with him. Go talk with him, it could be the difference between and A and a B.

this class is alot of work. be prepared to study for several hours every night. everyday is like an oral pop quiz which not only affects your grade but makes you look stupid in front of your class mates. he is a very nice guy and willing to help but expects way too much from 101 sutdents. do not take this class if you are not a history person.

As an alum, I can say that I look back on the challenges of Dr. Patterson's classes fondly. He forced me to work hard and learn, and his socratic method in Hist 101 was a perfect precursor to law school. It's not easy, but for those of you intending to continue on to grad/professional school, remember that he is preparing you well and rise to the challenge.

For a class that has a reputation as being the most difficult of all the honors classes, this one lives up to its reputation. Certainly do not expect an easy A because you will fall flat on your face. You may never know the first names of your classmates, either. Seriously though, the class is an experience you'll love and never forget.

INCREDIBLE CLASS! One of my 3 favorite professors during Undergrad. Brilliant, fascinating, engaging, and demanding. I never studied more for any class than I did for this one (except maybe for Carlsson's Econ 224 ...), and I learned an unbelievable amount from the experience. He is very generous with office hours as well. Go talk with him!

Dr. Patterson's Hist 101 class was relatively difficult, but certainly doable. He does use socratic dialectic. He was sometimes vague, but willing to speak to students during his office hours. The connections he makes between things could be difficult to follow. He was always polite and formal with students.

Prof. Patterson is brilliant and has unmatched passion for history. The workload can get overbearing at times. His intellect sometimes leaves you guessing and confused in class discussions, but i learned so much. Also, he teaches socratically.
