Prof. Spainhour is very passionate about journalism, and is a clear and knowledgable communicator in the classroom. Her excitement for it all helped me to get excited about journalistic writing. She gave us assignments that would mirror the work that journalists are doing in the field. The big assignment at the end of the semester is worth a lot.

She likes to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you're a good writer, expect her to read your work aloud. Pay attention, participate, weigh in on discussions and CITE YOUR SOURCES. She's a great professor and really an inspiration to her students that want to go into journalism.

Has her masters in Journalism so she'll tear your articles apart. Always willing to help. Make sure you go to class and take notes, tests come straight from that. Took this class along side of JOUR 3050 (Topics in Journalism) and a lot of articles and assignments overlapped, which was nice. Taking again for JOUR 3162 (Feature Writing) next semester

Spainhour is extremely passionate about Journalism and it shows in her lectures. You will have to work hard to make a good grade. Definitely read the text book and other assigned readings as this material will be in the tests. Challenging course, worth it for a Journalism minor/Comm major!

Professor Spainhour can be a stringent grader, but she means well and is always fair. The content she teaches is very relevant and useful for a communications major. Just attend class and do the readings and you will do fine in her course.

Although doing the reading and scrutinizing your papers prior to turning them in is essential, Professor Spainhour is a very fair grader. As with most strenuous college courses, as long as you do the readings and attend class, you will do just fine in her course! I found her to be a kind instructor willing to help struggling students.

She's really funny and makes the class pretty interesting. But she is hard to please and get an A with. She makes you present in front of the class a lot too. Her test are really hard and she offers no extra credit for the class. She's really quick at emailing but requires so much of you for projects as if you don't have other classes.

Not an easy A, but it's a pretty straightforward class. Very liberal and if you do not agree with her and her media choices, save yourself the trouble do not add your opinion to her assignments. Not very clear on grading. Only two absences allowed and she takes points off your final grade if you use any electronics in her class, so beware of that.

She's made me a better writer and made me look at journalism and the media differently. Not an easy A but will feel amazing if you accomplish that!! I would take her because she makes you challenge yourself.

Spainhour has to be the worst teacher ever! I had her for topics in writing. She will give you the basic criteria for an assignment, will look at your work and say "Ahhh this is amazing" and give you an 80 as your grade for that assignment. How does amazing work get an 80? She is not clear about her assignments and her grading criteria.

Ever take a class and think "I will never use this?" Well, you will use everything Spainhour teaches you. Great classes. She gives really clear instructions and is really helpful if you ask. You are only allowed two absences so be sure you go to class. The tests are hard but they won't kill your grade if your other is quality. :) She's the best.

Cheryl is outstanding. I hate that she uses tests in her journalism classes, but her editing skills and experience is invaluable. After taking her Feature Writing and Advanced News and Reporting classes, my journalism skills have improved ten-fold. Highly recommend, but be ready to work. Her classroom is ran as tight of a ship as a newsroom.
