Took this class based on reviews, but it sucked. The class was super boring and extremely monotone. Ifyou are taking this early in the morning you will most likely fall asleep. He grades his papers very harshly, and get ready to read. We read 6 books in 7 weeks. Gives like 150-250+ pages to read over 2-3 days which is a lot if you are taking15-18cr

I appreciated Professor Lowney's class. The course was surrounded by readings of the Harlem Renaissance and Lowney is clearly passionate about the genre. He cares about what you have to say and tries his best to keep the class engaged. I would take his class again if I had the opportunity to do so! A wonderful man and a great professor!

I took a graduate class with Dr. Lowney. He is very caring and definitely inspirational in his knowledge. He knows a lot and is happy to share. He made us write weekly responses on blackboard. Difficult but definitely worth it. He would usually read and share his notes in the first few minutes of class, and then have us discuss. Take him!

This class requires a lot of reading and you need to post your blackboard assignments on time to receive an A. I fell short in that category and received a B. Really nice guy. If you can keep up with the schedule I say take the class.

I took Modern Fiction with him and it was quite possibly the worst English class I've ever taken at SJU. All he does is lecture. People fell asleep in my class more than once. Not to mention his grading is terrible. He would write 'good idea' comments on one person's paper and bad on another even though the ideas were the same. Avoid!

He really needs to retire, all he ever does is just lecture. He has no interest to better someone as a writer because if you're not a person who has a prowess for writing then of course you're not going to get that A led alone a B for the very least. Not only you won't be learning but he assumes everyone is a scholarly writer AVOID. Attendance? LOL

I was so excited to take African American literature! I was looking forward to in depth class discussions about the readings, and the social/political problems presented in them. Needless to say, I didn't get what I was looking for. He's a snooze! This class is a disappointment because all he does is lecture. He doesn't do the course justice.

Professor Lowney was a great teacher. The online class required a lot of reading, and I mean a lot, but besides that it was good. Two papers based on the novels and 2 discussions a week based on readings. If you are willing to work a little he is great. I would take him again.

Lowney is a great guy overall. His class could be boring as ever but his generosity makes it an easy A. Attendance not mandatory. His workload wasn't hard and he's a very fair grader. He's VERY into film so we watched a few movies during the semester. He has a sense of humor and isn't uptight at all. I recommend him but make sure you read the texts

Boring doesn't even begin to describe his class. His lectures make you want to zone out and watch paint dry. You'll have to read each and every poem and novel just to even understand the questions on the final, let alone pass, and they're not even interesting. I won't say you shouldn't take his class, but seriously think about what you're doing.

Comment:
The class is not very interactive. He lectures 90% of the time and asks very little of our thoughts. He is harsh with grading the essays. The class moves fast but the class sessions can be a bit slow.
