He is an entertaining lecturer. Some of the material is very vague, but if you can take notes quickly you should be fine. Depending on your TA reviewing the material is pretty easy in discussion section. Be sure to put in effort for the few essays, they are all graded by the TAs and basically determine your grade. Overall, Prof. Caper was great!

This. Man. Is. Amazing. Not everyones taste for sure but he is hilarious and captivating and intriguing with his teaching methods. I am so lucky to have taken his class before he retired, it made me switch to a cinema minor and want to pursue an internship and career in cinema. As an artist, I loved the way he applied cinema to art, culture, & life

Casper is an incredible lecturer. He's intense, passionate, and a joy to listen to--the only teacher who can lecture for 2 hours and hold attention. However, this class is NOT easy. Even for a film major like me, it was still challenging. If you have a good TA, just put in the work and it's not impossible to get an A. RIP Casper youll be missed.

Drew Casper makes lectures relatively entertaining, but its hard to learn any material from them because theres no structure. Depending on what TA you have for discussion, your papers will be graded differentlyand mine didnt give anyone in the class an A. 190 is not an easy GE. Theres a lot of papers and material to cover. Wouldnt recommend.

Drew Casper is one of the most passionate professors at USC and very knowledgeable about cinema. I am so glad I got to take a class with him before he retired. I was planning on taking a class with him next semester that I have now dropped because he won't be teaching it anymore. The class is completely graded by TA's and he has no role in grades.

Do NOT take this class if you want an easy a for GE. 3 papers, 4-hour lectures, and fairly difficult exams make this one of the most difficult GEs you can take. Prof. Casper is alright but his lectures are very difficult to follow. Do not buy either of the textbooks, they are completely useless. To get an A: go to every lecture and take notes. GL

He's the worst professor I've ever taken. Treats his lectures like its a performance, the TAs don't like him. If you have never taken a film criticism course DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Doesnt spend too much time teaching how to analyze films properly, so you will fail. Doesn't prepare you for any of the exams and you only watch old white people films.

Although some of the lectures were long, they are mostly enjoyable. The discussions (mine at least) have nothing to do with the lectures, and your grade is based almost entirely on the papers that you write (which are graded by the TAs). Casper himself is energetic and enthusiastic, but your experience with the class will vary depending on your TA.

His lectures are either very entertaining, or excruciatingly long. He teaches as if it's a show - we clap at the end of lecture. The course is more work than expected, not an easy A GE. Was told if you attend lecture and watch the movies you'll be fine, but it's more than work than that. Overall ok, but wouldn't recommend taking unless u like film

Prof. Casper is an entertaining lecturer, but there is far too much material to cover, and he doesn't use any slides whatsoever. This course was brutal. Just brutal. Do NOT take this course if you don't like old films, it was quite possibly the most boring collegiate level class I ever could've signed up for. Beware.

Drew Casper is a nice guy and undoubtedly entertaining, but he's not the inspirational legend he's made out to be. Don't feel like I learned all that much in his class. However, there are certainly worse professors out there because he definitely cares about the quality of his lectures, well-being of his students, and truly loves film.

I've taken Casper's CTCS 190 course and his CTCS 469 course (Hitchcock), and I absolutely loved him. He is seriously one of my favorite professors I've ever had and I don't think people give him enough credit. He is extremely intelligent and challenges his students. Casper is a legend, and I seriously recommend taking his classes if you love film!!

Professor Casper's lectures are all focused on him being theatrical. I feel like the class is not really a lecture but it's more of a 1.5 hour long speech. I often found myself bored with the content. If you've taken a BASIC film course before, take the waiver exam if you can, and study a little for the waiver exam. I disliked this course a lot.

One time in class he threw my laptop and another time made me sing. I still took his 464. Honestly I'm pretty sure this whole class is just USC messing with us.

Class is less a lecture than a performance. Casper is clearly knowledgeable but I found myself wishing he would stop with the theatrics and get on with teaching - something that would have made the lectures half as long. Just know everything in the chapter summaries in the course reader and you'll be fine.

An institution at the school, and for good reason. Extremely prepared and the lecture is full of information. You definitely get what you pay for. The class is very well organized and not a lot of work at all. Tests are very easy. Don't need to read. You don't even need to show up to the screenings. Films are hollywood but that's what the class is.

Least favorite prof Ive had at USC. Eccentric, scattered, calls out students. Screens old white Hollywood movies. Ignores international cinema at the time that was actually relevant - French New Wave anyone? Never discussed. Casper is all about HOLLYWOOD and HIMSELF. Unless you like outdated ideology and Mildred Pierce, PLEASE dont take Casper!

CTCS 190 was not a bad class. Casper is like an old grandpa that pokes fun at people (shouldn't be taken seriously). His class made me appreciate film on a whole another level. TAs do all the grading. 3 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. Midterm and Final were easy but you have to study! My TA was a harsh grader but still did well.

He calls out students but takes it too far (made fun of kid obviously on the autism spectrum); brought god into several lectures; screens white, predominately cishet male films w/ offensive stereotyped roles (Lottie in Mildred Pierce for ex) but never brings that up. Go to class, and you'll get an A (BME major so def not a lot of work/effort 4 me)

Be prepared for three extensive papers, a midterm, a final, and nothing else. TA's are usually helpful if you ask. The lectures aren't absolutely necessary but I would go just because the guy's a lot of fun and he's specific in a way the textbook/TA discussions aren't
