Dr.Kolchin is the best. Better than any History professor at UD. Go to class, pay attention, take notes and you will be fine. Doesn't grade too hard. Exams are relatively easy. He really knows what hes talking about.

unreasonable expectations- focuses on grammar instead of ideas. grades papers very hard. lectures were as entertaining as watching paint dry

Lecture is boring but if you take good notes you're good to go for the exams. Take Chris Eberle as the TA, he's really good at explaining and he's realistic (he knows not everyone loves history). The book is helpful. Tests weren't hard if you went to class/discussion; it's pretty obvious what will be on there.

This class is big time consumer, tons and TONS of reading. Exams all written exceot for a few MC. Jumps topics alot and it's hard to keep on track of how to organize yourself. Fair grader, does curve papers and exams. But your hand will be in a mad cramp at the end of tests after writing for 50+ straight minutes.

This class will be the death of you! If you plan to take it make sure you set aside your entire social life to study for his impossible exams, which, may I add, are entirely essay questions. His grading scale is horrendous and not fair! His lectures are dry and impossible to pay attention in since he does not use slides and frequently topic jumps

This class was AWFUL. Terrible. Lectures are so boring. He grades your papers however you want. Tests really aren't THAT hard and the quizzes are easy but this is not worth the effort unless you HAVE to take this class.

Really don't like his teaching style. He doesn't use powerpoints so you have to write down everything he says as he says it. His tests are a few mc, short answer, and then an essay. The mc questions can be really tricky or specific with dates or names. He makes the class unnecessarily hard. Take someone else if you can!

Talks EXTREMELY FAST for taking notes. you have to read 2 VERY LONG books. There aren't many options to boost your grade. If you can type REALLY FAST and listen to looooong, boring lectures, this class is for you. Otherwise, i'd skip it.

good prof, its your run-of-the-mill history class, not that hard, you can BS the essays on tests, I didn't read the two books assigned or read the text at all and got a B-, if you actually do the reading you will get an A

Kinda boring at times, but overall a really great class. Covers interesting material that i had never learned in any other US History class. The reading load was a little heavy at times, but the tests were very straight and to the point, no trick questions... if you know your stuff, youll get an A

Great Professor, a true expert in his field. If you have the priviledge to have his class than you are truly lucky. Very organized and very clear about the material. Exams are fair and require you to know the material. Overall, one of the best professors at UD.

class focuses very little on actual civil war. Essay questions on tests are graded very difficult, as he is very picky with what he wants out of answers. interesting topic, and some times class can be interesting, most of the time he makes it a real snoozer

Class is misnamed - did not really talk about the Civil War. Focused mainly on his interests (The South and slavery). Still, Prof. Kolchin is an expert in his field and makes the class interactive and interesting.

great professor, esp. if you like history. lectures are very organized and if you take notes you'll be set for exams. not much group discussion during class, but shares so much information that it makes up for it. likes to use themes to connect things.. very good class.

Very boring class. Extremely interested in the topic until I took this class. Hard grader- more intrested in fixing every little grammer mistake than the paper itself!
