Tom was great! I don't remember if lectures were mandatory, but I wouldn't miss them. He was great about working with students to help them understand topics and get caught up and he accepted late work at full credit within two weeks. Only annoyance for me was section mastery. If you scored below a 90 you were given a written assignment.

Grading system is not very good and very frustrating. You will spend hours on this course, if you are really into history then you should be okay. Although the quizzes are timed and you have to get a 90% on each quiz to pass and move on in the course which was very very frustrating for me. But a very informational course!

I took this class online and this was the absolute worst class I have ever taken. You have to self teach by reading a chapter of a book and take a quiz that has nothing to do with that chapter in the slightest. Whenever I emailed him for help he asked me to show proof I was not learning. I would never ever take a class taught by him ever.

Tom is awesome! Really enjoyed his perspective on why to study history, his philosophical interest, and his passion for both his students and subject. Like most NMC and other community college classes, it wasn't that hard. And I think that's okay. Certainly helped me decide I want to study history at a 4 year institution. 10/10

Tom is an amazing professor, hands down my favorite instructor I've ever had. He loves inspiring his students to be good people and exudes a genuine passion for history. He does lecture and show videos almost every day, but he keeps it interesting. He also frequently stops videos to insert extra information. Everyone should take a class from Tom.

An above average Professor. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, which were about 50/50 lecture to video/documentary. If you dislike the pausing of videos, he is not for you, as he will stop to clarify what is happening in the video. I found it helped me focus on the content. He has a lot to say about the philosophy of life, and how it affects you.

Tom is obviously a good guy. Its a bit unsettling for a professor to openly tell students he doesnt know they answer to a question, but I think hes a very knowledgeable professor. Front heavy class, lots of quizzes. Grades papers very tough listen. Hes done a good job of defeating the easy A stigma of history class.

I really like him as a teacher and as a person but there is WAY too much work. Quizzes every class, tons of reading and videos, and a decent number of writing assignments. He offers extra credit but it's not nearly enough to make an impact on a couple bad assignments.

Tom's class was very front heavy and a lot to take in at first. But after looking over grading for a little bit you start to see it's a very forgiving class. Love the "doesn't grade this work" comments on here. It's one paper, that he has students grade each other(a easy paper btw) and then HE grades you on your grading and your paper.

He is one of the worst professor at NMC. Just watch the video in class and read by yourself. Don't explain anything. Don't check paper by his own. Use stupid grading method.

Tom Gordon is one of NMC's finest professors! He is genuinely concerned with the success of his students, and goes out of his way to be supportive and helpful. He has a thorough grasp of his subject-area, and keeps things interesting by varying up class with lecture, hands-on, and small-group activities. I cannot recommend him enough. Great prof!

Comment:
Gordon's ideas are convoluted, and poorly explained. The classwork is redundant, but at least you'll never have to worry about failing if you show up- the classwork is beyond simple, and the grading is so generous that you literally don't have to try. He's not at all a competent instructor. Unhelpful, stubborn, and rude.

Grades more towards your gramatical usage opposed to context of history when writing papers. The use of one topic for all of the high value papers wrote through out the entire semester creates a large lack of interest and made writing very dull and boring. Videos during class were nice, and group quizzes and no large final was great.

I really enjoyed his teaching style and the text book he used, which he wrote himself. If you have trouble with grammar and writing then i advise against taking this class, only because he grades very harshly on the few papers you have to write. He could be an English teacher! Otherwise, great class. I learned a lot...and remember it!
