I really don't understand all of the harsh comments here. I have had Ted for multiple courses and have always found him to be a really easy breezy, knowledgeable prof with reasonable expectations. He does tend to wander during lessons, that's true, but ultimately he's a solid teacher. A very adorable guy, very sweet-natured, understanding and kind.

While I did enjoy Middle East Cultures with Dr. Swedenburg, he was a tough grader and required multiple chapter readings each week from 6 different books. Not a lot of grades in the gradebook, but several critical essays and quizzes based off the readings.

Professor Swedenburg mostly just rambles on about what he wants to talk about, and only vaguely ties it back to the course itself. Unapologetically and annoyingly liberal, which would be fine in a political discussion, but not really what I look for in ANTH courses.

Okay so I have had him twice. The first class was easy but everything he talked about was so outdated, including his opinions. I regret taking his class again, I strongly dislike it. He again teaches with VERY old books. His lectures are him stuttering and ignoring students. His quizzes have trick questions and he's slow with grading. DON'T TAKE!!

Long-winded kind of guy, doesn't use much visual aid. Lectures are exactly what the word means, and I would not recommend the class.

Weekly quizzes based on one book every two weeks or so. Fivesix-page papers generally critique assigned reading (five per semester). Get ready for lecture every day, without much discussion. But this is a sweet and intelligent prof who appreciates your hard work, if you are up to the challenge. Must attend class.

One of the most mediocre professors I have ever had. The class is boring and it does not deliver what the syllabus promises. Avoid!

I'm terribly disappointed with this class. Very boring and disorganized. Loves to hear himself talk. Ignores students' comments and discussion. Gives very vague instructions for assignments. Bases the class off of random articles. Half of the class wouldn't go if attendance weren't mandatory. Maybe other classes are better, but don't take this one.

I personally thought this class was pretty easy. We read 8 books over the course of the semester with a quiz on each one and 4, 5 page essays. Attendance is mandatory but class is a lot of fun. Dr. Swedenburg has a lot of great stories and insight. I plan on taking more of his classes in the future.

Dr. Swedenburg isn't for everyone, I agree. He's a true cultural anthropologist: he knows much about other cultures and understands them, and he loves to teach it. If you want to learn, take him. If you're easily-offended and extremely conservative, take someone else who won't teach you as much. Dr. S tells you the good and bad..haha.

Dr. Swedenburg is a hard professor; he teaches at a junior/senior level class, not doubt. His class is still very enjoyable, and the man knows his stuff. He is a bit opinionated, but the stuff he says is pretty funny. I would recommend him--not as an easy course but one where you really want to learn.

DO NOT TAKE! He is not insightful at all and is vulgar at best! He is very disorganized, the class is terribly boring. He is very opinionated. And unless you want a very detailed lecture over the art of "pegging" (just google if you are not aware of the term) pass on Swedenberg!

Swedenburg is an engaging and inspiring prof who is very opinionated but is very knowledgeable. Grades are based on quizzes and papers, both of which are easily manageable if you do the work. The class material is very interesting/thought-provoking, and class discussion is encouraged. Overall this was one of the more enjoyable classes I've had.

Swedenburg is the best professor I've ever had. I enrolled in this class with an interest but zero knowledge of the course material. His lectures aren't difficult to pay attention to, and I love his sense of humor. He definitely makes you work for your grade, but all of the books we read were interesting, so it's worth it. Take his class. :)

Ted is a really cool guy. Extremely opinionated, but if you are able to think for yourself you can appreciate that without letting it rule you. There was a lot of reading, but the majority of the topics were interesting. His classes are NOT for the easily offended or close-minded. Go in with an open mind and you'll enjoy him!

Politically, I agree with the Swede on most issues; however, the man remains insufferable. Pompous to the extreme, he reminds me of Ian, the new boyfriend from the movie High Fidelity, from the ponytail to the love of world music. Take it if you're planning on doing ethnography of pompous ****s, the Swede would be a wonderful field subject.

While Swedenburg is an amazing professor, very opinionated, and various other things, the class lacks when it comes to oranization. The syllabus is often disregarded when it comes to assignment descriptions and due dates, papers and assignments are pushed forward by days, emails with assignment details are never sent.

Yes, he's very opinionated, self-important, and can seem closed minded at times. But the class I had him in was very stimulating and eye-opening. Reading the material is a MUST. His quizzes can be difficult, but if you're a half-decent writer, you can easily redeem yourself on the tests and essays. He's hilarious, too. Highly recommended!
