Comment:
Professor Gura is a really sweet and understanding professor. He is very passionate about the subject material, but is also very interested in what the students have to say. He calls randomly in class, so come prepared. The papers were not difficult, but he lacked a clear grading rubric and never gave paper feedback.

Comment:
The class isn't inherently difficult, just be prepared to be called on at random and read a ton. Grades are based on essays for which you are given only a brief prompt and he provides no feedback, even when requested. I am not one of those students who just doesn't put in the effort and expects an A, so trust me when I say the grading is unfair.

Pretty easy class, as long as you read the books and put some effort into the papers you will get an A. I got an A on every paper (7 in total). I took this online and attendance wasn't mandatory but it is when the class is in person. Very nice prof, never heard him say anything mean or harsh. Will call on you in class out of the blue.

Dr. Gura is deeply passionate about teaching students and loves the material he teaches, which makes the class so much better. There's a lot of reading, but it's definitely worth doing! He likes to call on random people and hear their opinions about the book, which is a nice change from the typical "Guess what I'm thinking". Overall, he's great!

Comment:
Professor Gura is so great. He is so invested in the novels (especially Moby D*** (apparently Rate My Professor won't let me put the title), which makes them so much more interesting to the students. There is a quiz at the beginning at most classes, so you definitely have to read. Quite a few papers that count as tests. He does take attendance.

Gura is my favorite professor at UNC. In class he talks about the readings so you don't actually have to read everything, but for the test I would look up a summary and look back at notes taken during class. He's passionate about the subject and I enjoyed lectures compared to other unc classes

I liked that he was super interested in the material. You dont necessarily have to do the readings, but sometimes he randomly calls on people. Your entire grade depends on exams, each one being worth 25%. Just go to class, pay attention, and take good notes (especially about the passages he highlights in class), and youll be fine.

Prof Gura is obviously passionate about the lecture material and is a really smart guy but he managed to make the lectures so boring and not engaging at all. Also, he's really unclear on HW and paper expectations. Only time I haven't enjoyed an English class.

Comment:
Professor Gura made American literature so engaging and interesting. He was so enthusiastic about Moby D it was heartwarming. Literally most of class was just summarizing the reading assignment, then like 15 minutes of analysis, mostly by him. Sometimes he was so eager he cut me off in the middle of a sentence, but he was really kind and caring.

Professor Gura is like an adorable grandfather. He is so passionate about what he teaches, he paces the room and gets so excited you can't help but get excited too. He covers plot points of the novels you read so it is not as intimidating as it seems. Participation matters but you will want to come to class, he is such a good professor.
