People who want an easy A but don't respect the field of Linguistics shouldn't take Botne. He actually really cares about what he does. He is a challenging professor who will always push you to always be better. I learned so much about fieldwork in his classes. He is always willing to sit down with you and give you ideas, references, etc. Take him!

Comment:
Botne is kind of terrifying. Very intelligent, but is pretty pompous. Seems to not care whether we understand or enjoy the class. He'll joke every now and then; expects us to read, participate, and learn things quickly. This was probably the hardest class I've taken (definitely in LING, maybe overall), but it was interesting and I did learn a lot.

Comment:
Courseload is too heavy for an undergrad course, and prof. doesn't seem to have much respect or patience for undergrads. Does not change requirements for grad vs. undergrad. Doesn't make you feel welcome to ask questions in class. However, it seems as though if you actually finish the obscene amount of work he assigns, he's not a harsh grader.

This was one of the most challenging classes I've ever taken. Professor Botne demands/expects a lot from students, which I found inspired me to work really hard and learn a lot. He guided through the process of doing linguistic fieldwork and writing up the results, and shared his experiences living in Africa. Great professor & material!

Interesting subject matter but really hard to follow and goes really fast and doesn't make things very clear. Tests are not too fair and he grades harshly.

He's a really nice guy and a good teacher. Sometimes he gets a little boring, but it's not too bad. He's knowledgeable and helpful, but he IS kinda a tough grader sometimes. Just be prepared to be challenged a little.

I really liked this class. Prof. Botne is funny and nice and answers even stupid questions. You should know basic linguistic vocabulary from L303 first, though. The class was interesting and I would highly recommend him.

awful awful awful! unnecessarily difficult grading, confusing and boring lectures, and inability to understand when students are grasping the concepts. he's a decent guy, but don't ever take this class with him. i am a strong student, but this class beat the crap out of me

He's a little intimidating at first, but he quickly loosens up and makes his students feel more comfortable. He's actual one of the best professors that I've had at I.U. His classes are challenging, and he has high expectations of his students, but the subject matter was so interesting that I had no trouble with the course. On a side note, negative comments were left by people taking an introductory level COAS class, so I'm sure they weren't interested in linguistics. He's also a snappy dresser.

I thought the class was really fun and he gets really into it too. Definitely a nice guy both in and out of the classroom. People below who took the intro level classes and complained were probably just too dumb to be taking LING classes.

One of the best professors I have ever had! Although the class was difficult, he encouraged people to ask questions and never made anyone feel stupid. If you put forth the effort in his class, you were rewarded. Excellent teacher!!

me first linguistics class and though it was sometimes challenging i learned a lot. at first it was hard to ask questions or give comments because you think he doesn't appreciate them, but that gets funny by the end and i ended up loving the course
