A knowledgeable, inspiring, yet down to earth professor who's still willing to respect students' ideas. Has an amazing attitude towards teaching and life in general. I feel extremely fortunate to have him for my elective but sadly, he won't be teaching this course again.

An amazing professor! Absolutely loves what he does. Interesting, knowledgeable, helpful, available, fair, positive, engaging, and with a great sense of humor. UBC needs more professors like him! An intellectual (and quite handsome) man :)

Very endearing & readily assisting. His "block" essay questions may seem long, but they will nicely guide you to think in the right direction. When he's reading poetry, there's a musicality, or "legato-ness," to his voice - which is lovely. He also holds a humble, and tranquil grace at his core and has taught my favourite HS engl teacher.

Amazing professor. He is so intelligent, but so down to earth and not intimidating at all! Readings were interesting, and he was a fair marker. If you take his class, go to his office hours! He is very friendly and interesting, and he won't let you leave until you are %100 confident with your essay idea. Highly reccommended.

I am about to graduate, and I would have to say John Cooper was my favourite prof in my four years worth of classes. Easy marker. Super intelligent, engaging, funny, sarcastic, and easy going. Has in depth knowledge of his subjects.

I thought John was the most fun and informative prof I've had at UBC. I've learned so much about directing and John is very fun with a great sense of humour and a firm grasp on the real world of directing. He treats students with utmost respect as young professionals rather than students and I have thoroughly enjoyed a year of classes!

Person: From the comments on my essay, he's a very thoughtful marker with a real sense of humour. Erratic in responding to e-mails - important in a regular Eng course, but *crucial* in a DET course. Course: Organized logically, interesting readings, course packet well-written&enjoyable to read, but it still doesn't compare to in-class experience.

Wow, that was so harsh. I found John very relaxed and understanding. And the class average was like 80! i learned a lot about directing and it helped me to understand acting a bit more also.

Very helpful and easily contacted. Very fair marker. I found the course readings a bit boring and abstract (not my taste, I guess), and for that reason, I found the course difficult and frustrating at times. But my effort was rewarded in the end. One of my highest grades this year.

Dual-natured: a bit arrogant and nonchalant at times, at other times sweet and understanding. Go figger. Not entirely objective or fair in marking or treatment of class members. Obviously has some expertise, but it'd be nice to see someone who's got consistent rapport, personality and clear marking expectations.

Best prof I've had during my 4 years at UBC. He made the class interesting with his genuine interest in the subject. When it did get dry, his sense of humour took over and made it interesting again. He is very approachable and makes everyone seem welcome whether it's asking about the material, or for reference letters.

I understood everything he said, and found his analysis of texts to be in-depth and well thought out. He rarely summarized texts, which was good- unlike most first year profs. Peole complaining he was "too complex" belong in ENGL 110 or 112. The readings were great. I'd want him again as a prof!

Talk about BORING!! This guy's lectures are too detailed with analysis and I got lost every class with his descriptive analytical way of saying things. He would be better teaching 3rd or 4th year english than first year. The course texts and TA's were good though.

Comment:
Horrible, horrible first year professor. As someone pointed out earlier, he is completely ignorant of his audience, lecturing as if we were all masters students. It was impossible to keep my eyes peeled. He took a subject I loved and butchered it.
