He is very well known in the music industry and can be very well considered a genius in computer music, however, his teaching style is very "in the moment" and generally lead on by whatever is currently going on in his mind. He also uses a textbook that is decades old, most likely because his name is on the cover as he was the author's friend.

Just because the name has MUS in it doesn't mean you should take it if you're a music student afraid of numbers that aren't scale degrees - this is more of a physics course than music. For those that are fine with some math though, Andy is an incredible teacher who's worked with almost every big name in electronic music and has plenty of stories.

He knows his stuff more than anybody, but you need to WANT to learn. He's hard to follow in class: if you look away from the chalkboard for a second, you will lose track of the notes. He won't remember your name, but once he does, that's how you know you've impressed him. 90% of the class failed the 307 midterm, but everyone did well overall.

Lectures were stream of conscious style, looking back on notes were hard to understand. Got an elitist vibe from him, he does know what he's talking about but he doesn't explain it in an easy to digest way. Also 2 semesters and not 1 mention of any female who's contributed to computer music is pretty awful in my books.

He obviously knows a lot but the way he teaches it is very disorganized. Uses a lot of technical terms and you cant be sure if what he's teaching is important or just one of his rants. Talks about himself and his achievements a lot.

Super smart guy, knows the material inside and out. Only had one assignment, directions were vague and it was never returned. DO NOT buy textbook. If you choose to do a demo for your final project, make sure you know your topic inside-out. He may question you quite hard. Overall, material was interesting once understood.

Dr. Schloss is a passionate teacher who is clearly well versed in his topic area, but teaching doesn't seem to be his priority. His lectures are scattershot and stream-of-consciousness, his assignments are vague with little direction. while there are no pre-reqs, if you do not have a basic affinity for music AND math you will find it difficult.

He's a genius with computer music, and I'd love to be able to do what he does, but he's an awful teacher. Shows up regularly 5 minutes late for class and then just starts talking. Midterm and Quiz were easy (a couple out of the blue questions) but 55% of the mark was a poster and an essay, and this is computer music class!

Horrible lecturer, awful text materials, gave us an exam that would take three hours to complete and expected us to do it in 50 minutes, unclear about what he's teaching, never e-mails back, doesn't show up to his own office hours, no feedback on assignments. Schloss is a genius at Computer Music, but clueless on communicating it to a class.

Interesting class. He was passionate about the topics and really knows what he's doing. Would recommend taking first year calculus and physics and some music theory before this course, but I did without. Don't buy the textbook. Midterm was much harder than expected. Most people in the class already had experience in digital audio.

DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. He referenced it maybe once. Very interesting demonstrations and good at explaining difficult concepts. Very little coursework but tests are harder then you would except. VERY slow marker.

He's very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter and has a great sense of humour ot boot but he's often late for class and is lazy with respect to marking. It was an interestion class but...yeah.

Most unhelpful teacher I have encountered at UVic. Never replied to any of my emails, never gives your assignments back. Buying the textbook is a total waste of money. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE GOOD AT MATH AND SCIENCE. This class is for people who like physics, too bad I thought it was going to be about music.

Awesome. His lectures are always interesting and hilarious. Demos are always funny and pertinent as well. Don't listen to people who complain about dullness or irrelevance (I liked the physics content) -but don't take MUS 207 if you don't like science at all. Only problem is that the text was a rip, but that's not necessarily his fault.

Textbook wasn't needed at all, complete waste of money. I think the only reason why he asked us to purchase it, was to prove his name was in the preface. Class made no sense, rambled from one irrelevant fact to the next. He's an intelligent man, but a terrible teacher. Over all the course was extremely confusing, and unorganized.

Very knowledgeable about the material (and he actually knew Max Matthews!) and has an awesome sense of humour (very dry and subtle). I wish he would use a different textbook though; the one he uses now is very outdated and hard to understand.

Probably the professor with the best sense of humour at uvic - it's subtle but amazing. Very smart guy. Sometimes opinionated and elitist. A little bit too much focus on science. Still, he cares about the subject, making the class feel very "real" and not read out of an age-old syllabus. Puts effort into marking unlike a certain Driessen.

If you've got a good background in physics (e.g. at least one university course), you won't need to go to half of 207. The parts of 207 I did attend, and all of 307, were very interesting, thanks to Dr. Schloss's penchant for unrelated but fascinating tangents. Very helpful outside of class, and easygoing too. Would have again. Love the whafro.

Class is pretty dull at times. Easy enough, except you never quite know what he wants. Tip: Don't do an essay for the final project, you can get an A by spending a few hours on a poster. Also, if you need your transcripts for grad school he is very slow at getting his marks handed in.
