Comment:
Professor Stocking was a brilliant prof. He had a course book for us, which outlined everything he said in class. Although he rambled on, and was sometimes hard to understand, he no doubt was extremely intelligent. He sort of fit the 'mad genius' trope, but in the best of ways. I took two courses with him, and they were both enriching and engaging.

Comment:
Dr. Stocking was brilliant and possibly a bit mad. His classes were a meandering mess of scholarly genius and screwball opining - they were always entertaining and informative. The exams were notoriously difficult, drawing often on one-off statements he made on obscure details and matters of his own personal taste. I miss him. RIP John.

Go to class if you want to pass. He is an AWFUL lecturer but you have to perserve... I wasn't strong enough to keep attending but his curve is CRAZY. I got 17% on a midterm and got a C+. Tests are insane with hundreds of multiple choice questions with about ten different possible answers each.

He's the type of guy that just goes off on one tangent after another, kind of like his pink book which is completely discontinous. That being said, he was totally awesome. I loved his class, and though the workload is big, if you can understand the ideas in his pink book, you realize it is not dribble at all, but the work of a mad genius.

You cannot pass this course without attending lectures. 90% of the final and mid-term will be on the lecture notes and his Pink Book. He will clearly state what will be on the test if you are listening in lectures. He will also practically give you the test questions if you attend a review session. Study is a must, attendance is a must.

Was polarizing. A lot of students got frustrated with his teaching style and attendance tapered off, especially after getting sideswiped by the first midterm. Test questions were arbitrary and required eidetic feats of memory...thank god they were curved. That said he is a brilliant man. I learned a great deal.

Professor Stocking's class was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. For me, it taught me what it means to have natural respect for a professor and how wonderful a lecture can be. I felt sorry for myself one the one or two occasions that I was a minute late since I missed the richness of the seconds lost.

He is such a funny older guy. Amazingly helpful; if you need to sit down with him he is more than happy to do so. He has pretty difficult tests, but if you go to class, pay attention, study hard, and go to his reviews (he basically gives you half the test), you will do fine. The curve really helps as well. Don't take if you are lazy.

Dr. Stocking's insights regarding art, architecture and the human situation can change your life. His class is interesting and engaging. Some students have trouble with his lecture and testing styles, but paying attention and reading what has been assigned assures comprehension. Stocking is a brilliant man trying to teach. Try to learn from him.

He seems like a nice professor, but his teaching skills are lacking. He rarely uses the text book, and the questions on his test are ridiculously hard. I would recomend not having this prof.

READ THE ASSIGNED READINGS--ESSENTIAL. His course supplement and the textbook are the two most important things if you want to pass his course. On the final he LITERALLY took 1 word out of the 200+ page textbook and used it as a question; Q:what did this guy say to the other guy? A:Six. *His curve boosts your mark; if you deserve a D, you get a B.

the lectures were alright. he is at least interesting. however his tests and exams were sooooo hard for me. personally i would avoid this class as the work load was quite heavy, and although i took notes during every class i am still just hopeful that i pass! he needs someone to proof read all of his material before he subjects it to students!!

Comment:
This class was so impossible. It was more work than all my other classes put together. Teaches at a 4th year level. Very informative, but just as overwhelming. You can get a good grade if you know your stuff. You don't mess around with this guy. His lecturing style is a little painful. He coughs into the mic too much.
