he gave the same advice to everyone, pretty much. others on here thought he was hard, but i thought he was quite forgiving, sometimes not constructive enough. i'm not sure now much my writing improved after taking his class. i really disliked that there was no revision.

Tony is tough. However, isn't honesty combined with helpfull comments to be relished compared to what the rest of the CW factulty gives to students? These other people let students coast by. Well, Tony does not. If you're a mature writer, you'll love him. If not, evaluate your own motivations for writing.

A bit arrogant, but wouldn't you be if you'd published as much work as he has? He really knows what he's talking about, & if you put forth real effort & truly care about writing & improving yourself as an writer, then you'll gain a lot from him. He is a harsh critic, but his aim is to help, not to harm. I credit all my progress as a writer to him.

Brutally honest, but rewards hard work and improvement. It's so funny to see all these complaints about how he belittles people and gives them bad grades, but with Tony you really deserve what you get. It's called tough love. Sorry you can't handle a teacher that takes you seriously as a writer. Going to miss this guy when I graduate.

Tony is difficult to peg. I had him this semester and found him to be very kind and funny, previous semesters have been different. I think he does take his students serious, so that is a plus. His book came out this year, so I think he was a bit more laid back: he was helpful, humorous, and provided the class with food and honesty.

I'm an English major. When I first met him I thought he was my connection and I was incredibly wrong. He's pretentious, his opinion gets in the way of his teaching, his expectations are impossible to achieve. He helped me with fixing my theses, but that was only to beat him, and I still lost against him. Avoid him if you actually want to learn.

This professor has no idea what teaching is. He belittled me in his critiques, advised me to drop this class, and gave me a C+ even though I did everything and more for the class. As a previous commenter said, first impressions are everything. Write like him and you'll be fine. Write like yourself and he'll tell you to drop.

With Tony, you will either like him, or hate him. His opinions seemed to cloud his ability to see how students seen the works that we read. However, I feel my writing skills have def. improved since taking this course(l202) and I kind of miss the sick challenge of trying to write something he would be impressed with. Which is usually nothing.

Pretty much, Tony fills his class time (full class time always) with bad metaphors for writing and interpreting literature. However, he takes the interpretation out of Literary Interpretation. If you don't see things his way, you are wrong. He is very inconsiderate of student answers and is pretty rude.

12 weeks into a semester and he gives out D's for A work and then accuses students of not knowing what a thesis is. Students got to college... they know what a thesis is. I could also really care less about his books coming out. Maybe one mention is OK but not every single class.

I went into this class thinking that I was a pretty decent poet/writer. I was very wrong. After just one lecture I found myself writing poems and stories that I actually liked. He very clearly instructs you on how to make your writing beautiful. I loved this class and this professor.

This professor is extremely judgmental and often times belittles students in front of the class. First impressions are the only impressions with this professor, good luck. You couldn't pay me to take another class with him again.

This is absolutely one of the worst professors/teachers I have ever had. He only cares for simple, boring stories. He forces you to write a certain way and will basically say you are a failure if you don't. He talks about himself all the time and is pompous and thinks he knows everything. He is obsessed with Janet Burroway. Avoid him at all costs.

Loves himself and no one else. Does not give any helpful criticism, only tries to make you feel that you have no abilities and he has everything. Yea the guy's been published, so have lots of bad authors, this does not justify his terrible approach to teaching. Avoid this class if you're still interested in creative writing.

He made it perfectly clear from the get go he would not be holding our hand that he'd be honest but respectful about our work. This he was. I respect the guy and and appreciated his teaching as I felt he knew what he was talking about. He's a writer who's published half a dozen literary novels. I think his work proves that he knows what writing is.

Ardizzone delved out helfpul, humorous stories while respectfuly if critically analyzing students work. Basically, he took us serious and helped greatly in teaching us the fundamentals of fiction writing and what the literary world expects. This is not a class for those expecting to be praised for every manuscript they submit. Ardizzone is honest.

Comment:
The only critical comments on Ardizzone are that he was harsh, did not coddle his students, and criticized the writer's work. Is this not what one expects in an upper level, 300 course? He is self-assured, and should be considering he has published 6 novels and won countless awards. He is very insightful and greatly broadened my scope of writing.

I had Tony for more than one graduate workshop, and he was my thesis director. I found him to be incredibly helpful. He's a successful writer and he can help you get there if you're serious about writing. He's a character all his own, full of joy and laughter, but serious about improving your work. I learned a lot from the stories he told.
