Comment:
As an honours student I was shocked to see a 53% on receipt of a completely subjective review of music appreciation. To be fair I am of the sciences, but I do appreciate music. I am not great at articulating myself either. I really enjoyed the content and what I have learned, but extremely disappointed in testing measures. Had to drop :(

Would have loved to learn something a little more relevant to the topic rather than his personal musings on the authors that wrote the insane amounts of readings. Presentations for the class were awful & mandatory, & his feedback was based entirely on his opinion of you. Easy enough marker, most stressful class of my undergrad. Final was worth 80%

For the most part, I thought he was a good prof. Knowledgeable, but tended to ramble a lot, which made the material a bit dense and uninteresting. I didn't like the exam marking, TA's were very inconsistent with marking, writing the same thing on two midterms produced a mark differences of 15%.

Regardless of what other people have said, I really liked Professor Grier's class. He really broadened my interest in popular music through the ages (Joni Mitchell and Madonna are now favourites of mine), and it was really interesting to learn about the artists' lives, their challenges, and what drove them to create the music that they did.

I stopped attending lectures after the second week. I never read a single page of any of the textbooks. On the tests I wrote semi-coherent essays COMPLETELY drawing from my own (limited) knowledge of Rock & Roll. I managed a 78. ANY student apt at writing essays could do the same.

A horrible human being that I hope I never have contact with again in my life. Although, the topic has a lot of potential he rapes it of any interest it might have. Avoid this man like the plague.

Quite simply - the best university professor I have had to date. The above comments are merely reflections of the students' desire to take a bird course and being thwarted. Grier's tests are demanding and always essay style, but his teaching style is clear, interesting, and very engaging. I would recommend to anyone to take his courses

Comment:
Not as bad as people say. Yes, the course is pretty..pointless, but if you attend classes, and actually answer the questions that are asked, it is relatively easy to pull off a good grade. Textbooks are pretty pointless, and very little studying is required for the exams. All in all, a pointless class, but Grier isn't so bad.

Comment:
The system of evaluation for this course, under Grier is ludicrous. Faceless, nameless TAs will be responsible for your grades ... some will mark in Letters, some in %s, some on a 1-10 scale, etc. There is absolutely no consistency. It will be relatively easy to pull a B, and frustratingly difficult to pull an A, regardless of your aptitude.

Awful. You think the course is gonna be great at the beginning, but it is not at all. The exams are strictly essay type questions that are marked by TA's you've never seen or heard of. They are marked extremely hard, and the questions are on topics not even discussed in class. I want a refund.
