Professor Bloem is very kind and I really like her as a person. She's knowledgable and passionate about the content. She assigns a fair amount of work. However, her expectations are confusing and she doesn't explain things clearly. Most of the time information about assignments was not released until there was less than a week until the due date.

Professor Bloem was amazing. The class was not easy by any means, but she truly wanted her students to succeed and understand the course content. A few quizzes, in class writings based on the reading, video project, and service learning was what we were graded on. Really enjoyed the class. You have to put in the work, but great prof and experience!

Bloem is very passionate about literature and the refugee crisis. However, she is very disorganized, doesn't give clear expectations, and doesn't appreciate interpretations which differ from her own. She is fun and assigns great readings, but is a bit scattered. She also doesn't post grades so you never really know how you are doing.

Prof. Bloem is a terrible professor! She does not care whether you do well or not. She gives lengthy assignments very close to each other and her expectations are way to high considering that she gives inadequate instruction. If I did not love my major, I would have switched because her class is so terrible. Her grading criteria is trash! DONT TAKE

Professor Bloem loves the practice of teaching and truly wants her students to become the best teachers possible. I learned so much about children's literature in this course. I will miss having her as a professor. :)

Dr. Bloem's class can be at times confusing but her passion for the subject overrides anything else. She is hands down my favorite professor at GVSU. If you don't put the effort in or ask questions, the class will of course be difficult. It is a college class, she is not there to hold your hand and take you step by step.

This professor is one of the reasons I left elementary education AND GVSU. In fact, when I look back at GVSU, one of the biggest things I remember is how awful her class was. There was way too much going on! I have felt stress about many college courses, but hers was one of the worst.

One of my favorite professors ever. She expects class participation. The class is very moving and informal. I would recommend it to anyone who likes literature.

Dr. Bloem is nice as a person but is not very good when it comes to teaching. You can tell she has a passion for the subject and knows a lot about the books that you read, but she does not make her expectations clear at all and does not give out rubrics. As such you often get much lower grades than you expected to get and have no idea why

I think that sometimes she forgets that it is a 100 level English class, she gives so much work and makes out of class events mandatory. She is also an unclear grader, using very vague critiques. She also calls people out to embarrass them. She has outrageously high standards for a gen ed class.

She's very nice, and attendance is mandatory, but I didn't learn much in her class. She talks alot and her lectures don't seem very helpful if you plan on being a teacher. She is a tough grader, and even if she tells you that you did a really good job that means you might had a B or lower. Her quizes are specific and her insturctions are not clear.

Shes a nice lady but as a teacher she thinks that her class is the most important thing in the world and that we dont have other classes or get sick or anything. Her assingments are also very unclear and she doesnt like to explain them

If you think Dr. Bloem is a tough grader or don't like her classes then you're obviously just lazy. Although she does require a lot of reading, all of the reading are very informative and you learn so much. She knows what she's talking about and truly cares about seeing her students succeed. Get to know her and she'll never forget about you!

Pat Bloem is one of the best English teachers at GVSU. She is caring about your interests, perspectives and the world around us. VERY literature heavy but she is willing to help with suggestions and books from her office bookshelf. If you are not a reader, challenge yourself by taking her class. I love her!

I really enjoyed this class and professor! There is a TON of reading, but if you do it and participate, it is well worth it. Everything you read is really good and eye opening. I learned a lot from this class and I think anyone who takes it would get a lot out of it. Not as easy A though, you have to participate.

Not organized, errors in her paperwork, when reading a book--expects students to remember the same things she does about it. No clear idea of what she wants for project, like a rubric, doesn't go over directions well. Get ready to read about 13 books actually.

Prof. Bloem expects all of your time to be dedicated to her class. Her expectations are never clear, and although she can come off as a sweet lady, she really seems so scattered she doesn't know who you are in the end. Pick someone else for this course if you don't want to read around 12 novels for one class.

Lots of group projects, no idea what your graded on, very disorganized, scattered, overwhelming, tons and tons of reading, plan on ten books at the least, it's like craming for a final all semester long.

You will not get an easy A in this class, BUT if you do the reading and participate, you will benefit from it immensely. Bloem chooses excellent books and the discussions are very meaningful. Get to know her and take advantage of her knowledge of the world. She's a good friend/resource to have at the university for future research/classes.
