Professor Garland is a fantastic guy. He is truly there for the purpose of teaching students. He is very passionate about ancient Greek and Roman culture, and taught me things I never knew about them. He has an odd sort of humor, which makes his class all the more entertaining. I highly recommend taking a CORE class with him.

Topics could sometimes be a bit dry, but he tried to make them as interesting as possible. Class participation is important. He had very specific requirements for papers, so make sure to do exactly what he asks of you and talk to him in office hours beforehand. But, as long as you paid attention in class, tests were a major grade booster.

Garland is definitely a tough professor, but if you put forth the effort, he will give you the help that you need. He's very passionate about the subject matter and he really cares about his students. Class was largely discussion-based and he occasionally called on people randomly, so be prepared to do the reading.

Greek history was a lot of fun with Garland. He's very passionate about his subject. Reading is very important in this class and he really likes the people who speak up. 3 short papers on interesting topics made the class very manageable. He was always ready to help develop a paper topic. Really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Boring, but helpful... until he learned I was in a fraternity, at which point his entire demeanor changed in an instant. From then on he was a complete jerk, ignored my input, scewed me on grades, total change of attitude and completely unprofessional. I've heard of others having the same trouble with him. What a waste.

Prof. Garland is a really nice guy and is super excited about the material for western trad - makes class a lot more bearable. however, he lectures a lot and although he opens things to class discussion, it isn't enough to keep everyone's attention all of the time. His enthusiasm makes up for this overall, though.

The most amazing professor I have ever studied under. He is patient, empathetic, brilliant, funny, and friendly. Anyone who thinks he is a poor language teacher must just suck horribly at languages. He is a fair grader, and always willing to help a student out. Take a class with him!
