Comment:
I've taken Magessa for 4 french courses now and he never disappoints. He is a hard but fair marker and always ensures his students that it's not the first mark that counts but the last. Gives time to improve and great feedback. I completely disagree will all that say he is unfair. By far the best and most organized Prof in the french department.

Magessa bored me to death and his course was VERY difficult. I've never struggled with French but I can honestly say this was the hardest course I've taken at MUN. Find a tutor, make some friends in your class and know the modules inside. He is unclear and you should avoid if you can.

I completely disagree with those who say this prof is unapproachable. He's one of the most helpful profs I've ever had, and I never felt uncomfortable asking questions. He is a very tough grader, but it's only because he expects a lot from his students. If you're willing to rise to the challenge you'll do fine. But don't expect to get an A.

He is a good prof. His choice in reading material was bad. They weren't hard but they were boring. He is very approachable and overall a good person. I would take another course taught by this prof.

I took a second year literature course with this prof and found his choice of material to be way above a second year reading level. At the end of the course his theory was, if you got through these books, you can read anything! However meant to be inspiring, my low grade said otherwise.. I also found him intimidating and hard to approach.

Comment:
Approachable, well spoken prof. He speaks in french the whole time, but he's easy to understand and totally open to questions. Sometimes the grammar he chooses to focus on is a little strange, and the books you read are a little hard (though, he gives you a break on that, if you don't totally understand the book), but your reading will improve alot

I found him to be great! Yes, he's tight on grammer (75% grammer and 25% content for all papers) but he gives you lots of feedback, and if you do bad on one of the papers he doesn't hold it against you. The tests are predictable if you pay attention in class. This course was a lot of work... but it's totally do-able by the average french student.

What a little twirp. No time for students what so ever. He is evidently the most arrogant man on campus. His tests are completely unfair and way to long to be completed in 50 mins. you certanily will not get the marks you deserve on assignments. Why do they keep him around? Do yourself a favor and save yourself the agony. Try another prof.

The meanest man you could ever meet... seriously, if you can at all avoid having M. O'Reilly as your prof, sttteeerr clear! He has no time for students who aren't bilingual, or who completed french immersion.

I really enjoyed this course.O'Reilly was a very hard marker, but I always found him more than willing to help and extremely nice and approachable outside of class. He also encourgaed class participation, which made things interesting.Perhaps he has no patience for first year French, but he was excellent for this course. He expects a lot of work tho!

To the person who commented 4XXX, has it occurred to you that French is one of the second language requirements for B.Arts etc... not everyone, like yourself and Prof O'Rielly are doing a major in it. You obviously like the course, however, for me as well.. lost complete interest in further studying after taking a course with sucha little numbskull

It's been a number of years since I passed through MUN, but I remember him well: tough, but fair, always willing to help. I found him kind and he forced us to learn. Best prof I had.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!! He has NO tolerance for even the smallest mistakes and He requires you to do interviews which are too hard at this level. He even admitted he was the hardest french prof at MUN!!
