Terrible experience. He posted the readings for the week the day before our seminar meetings (sometimes only 20 minutes beforehand), and I didn't receive a single grade or piece of feedback on my assignments the entire semester. He also submitted my final grade an hour after I submitted my 16-page term paper, so I don't think he even read it.

This was one of the most disappointing classes I've taken. McNeilly's lectures and delivery of content is extremely disorganized, he graded our papers very late, provided very loose and abstract explanations of concepts, and was generally not a very effective teacher. He seems nice and knowledgeable, but this did not translate into class at all.

Prof. McNeilly is a great guy but not a great teacher. The class mainly consisted of him rambling, extrapolating, and seemingly making stuff up. He was extremely unorganized and unclear, rarely did anything on time, and did not prioritize his own class. I can't say that I learned anything from this classlet alone understood what he was "teaching"

He is fairly disorganized, gives vague rubric criteria, and tends to ramble off topic more often than he covers actual material. An ok class if you are already good at English.

Submitted 4 assignments and no student has received a single mark back as of yet. We were expected to write our final without a SINGLE mark or feedback. Went into every assignment completely blind, not clear at all what was expected and the class was essentially like watching a TED Talk between 3 profs.

Often goes off topic in lecture. It is the last week of class and I have not received a single assignment grade or feedback.

He ends up introducting many concepts in one class and goes off tangents often. While he is a super caring and nice professor, expect to feel dumb when he explains concepts. His lectures are a bit monotone too.

Dr. McNeilly is a super understanding prof. Great for first-year classes. He can get a little off-topic in lectures, but as long as you understand the general point of the lecture then you are good to go. Most importantly make sure you do all of the readings that he has assigned. If you're decent at English then this course is definitely for you.

Many, many asides and very confusing lectures. Our TA was also really hard to understand, the class seemed catered towards a PHD English class rather than an undergraduate one. I often felt quite lost during lectures because of all the Greek words and tangents and feedback for essays, which were graded by the TA, was unclear.

Professor McNeilly is super nice. That being said, it was tough following along in lecture because of a very disorganized format & lots of abstract concepts that went over our heads. He didn't return papers with enough time for us to review them, and usually only gave one kind of interpretation for each reading which made it seem pretty biased.

Lectures tend to wander with many asides, but they are pretty interesting. He chooses great readings and cares a lot about students developmet and well-being. He is fairly easy to negotiate for extensions. There are 3 papers for this class, and a take home essay for final.

It's hard to review him because his classes are some of the best at UBC, he's such a nice guy, and his reading list is amazing. But he's also incredibly disorganized, which can make it difficult to do well despite fairly lenient marking. Overall he's a good choice if English is your strength, but if it's not I would proceed with caution.

I didnt like how the course was organized. I took ENGL 111(Approaches to non-fictional prose) with him. Im not sure if its just me, but i feel like he teaches you what the hidden meanings of the books are, but doesnt teach you how to come up with it. He also forgot to upload this topic sheet by 3 days although we were only given a week to do it

Kevin was such a great prof! Although he did take a while to get our marked papers back to us, he genuinely cares about his students and their well-being. He's really understanding with deadlines and very approachable. Really smart guy, and was able to teach the material really well, and was obviously passionate about it!

Kevin tackles the toughest of European thinkers with a round, off-kilter semi-understanding most distasteful to the old-country mind. If you are Giorgio Armani; he is a Big Steel Man sale sportcoat and khakis or Dockers. If you have great expectations-- he will lower them! If you like the island of Nova Scotia-- he will introduce you to "Old Hal."

Kevin is very inspirational and knowledgeable, however sometimes his grading criteria is unclear and many of my friends were frustrated that he is scatterbrained and nonspecific. Personally I really enjoyed his class, however if you generally struggle in English or writing... I would stay clear of this class.

He was one of my favourite professors at UBC till now. His way opening us to concepts that are so useful in textual as well as literary analysis is exceptional. His way of bringing things out of the box and having us analyze that, was really cool.

Professor McNeilly is a caring prof and pretty great as a person. However, he is very slow to give marks back (I have only received one essay mark back, and have no idea what my final grade is yet, even though it is the end of January), he always lets class out late, and does not respond to emails very well. I did, however, enjoy the books he chose

Horrible horrible horrible lectures. Close readings are necessary, but does content mean nothing? Couldn't get through a sentence without etymologies. Never seemed to be prepared. Often lost train of thought. lectures were useless. I honestly felt like I couldn't make it through them. I love English and hated it with him. Don't take his course.

I still don't know what was expected from me in this class. Classes always went over the 50 minutes and most of the books assigned to read were not fun at all, especially Findings. Took it to fulfill a Literature requirement, really glad it's over.
