All around very decent prof. She grades pretty easily though it's hard to parse out how you can improve since she doesn't leave any feedback on your assignments. Tries very hard to keep the classroom casual and interesting despite often boring material.

A great deal of reading, but not many long readings. Interesting lecturer and very funny. Fair grader.

Prof Tolmie is an awesome lecturer. I was always engaged in what she had to say, and what she said in her lectures would show up on tests. She is a tough marker though, no matter how hard I tried I was never able to get it that A+ standard. I would take her class again though, she knows what she is talking about!

Definitely my favourite prof. You don't have to do a lot of reading outside of class as she does a lot of close readings in class. Her lectures are interesting and she is so passionate about her field. There are more assignments than other classes, but they are all pretty easy and not worth a lot.

She is a great lecturer for a such a usually boring subject. Her lectures make the information fun and easier to listen to. She has a great personality and attitude towards the subject. Taken her courses before, will take other courses offered by her.

Great prof, clearly enthusiastic about subject matter. Look interested in class and you'll be fine. Doesn't require a lot of in-class discussion. Enthusiasm is what makes for a better mark here.

hottest, most brilliant professor at waterloo. where her peers are bitter and brilliant, she is geeky, hysterical [if you are paying attention] and entirely approachable. one of the kindest people i've ever met. and BEST course i ever took.

Not a very good prof. Her lectures are convoluted, disorganized, and of little meaningful content - her explanations of works are mostly fluff. Her marking seems fair, but it is hard to say because she does not take the time to provide any comments.

Tolmie is so passionate about what she teaches. I've had three classes with her and I can say that her smaller classes are the best. She makes you love Chaucer and she's one of the most approachable professors that I've ever had. Tolmie is just a really lovely person and an engaging professor.

she definitely knows her stuff inside and out. the only downside is that she does not post any notes on an overhead/slide projector and listening to her talk for an hour and a half can really wear on you. shes a very fair marker, but never leaves any feedback.

Good prof, really knows her stuff and it appears that she enjoys teaching it. Classes can get boring if you aren't interested in the material, but a variety of texts are covered, so it won't get to boring/repetitive. Grading is fair; however, I didn't receive a single constructive (or other)comment, save for the final grade, on all my projects.

great prof, really passionate about Chaucer.lectures feel like she's discussing the material and allows students to add their opinions too. lots of reading but you can get away with skimming if you attend all the lectures and make sure you know the central themes, characters, morals etc. if you ask, she will clarify exactly what she expects to pass

Her lectures were fairly entertaining, she seemed to know her information pretty well, and she was very good about posting missed lectures online. Assignments and tests were very reasonable. I would recommend taking this course with her.

This course was simply an extended close reading of early Chaucer, but surprisingly interesting nonetheless. She doesn't give a lot of feedback, but is an easy-ish marker. Really knows her stuff, has written a lot of the criticism you will encounter in research (Unrelatedly, she is so elegant and well-spoken; her lectures are a pleasure though dry)

Amazing, amazing prof and class! It's a course on one of the most difficult poems in the English (right up there with Spencer's Faerie Queen and Milton's Paradise Lost), and Dr. Tolmie makes this poem enjoyable, understandable, and completely relateable. Totally worth taking if you have even the slightest interest in English Lit and/or early psych.

Piers Plowman is a class for English Students (please decide, before lectures, if you are an English Student or are "going through the motions". FURTHER, Piers Plowman is a class for LIT students. It is REALLY stupid, for an RPW student to complain about the "real world applicability" of a C14th poem. Suck it up and take "business writing"

Great professor! It is a shame that Piers Plowman is the worst poem ever written. If she is teaching ONLY Piers Plowman, drop out ASAP. You won't regret it, when your friends are readign a poem that makes NO sense and takes forever to get through.

Very Very boring lecturer! She did absolutely nothing to make the subject material interesting. She also failed the entire class on a translation quiz. A very tough marker and very difficult to please!
