Comment:
While Dr. Friesen is very tough in O-chem, he is much more lenient, flexible, and generous in his upper-level courses. He wants the students who have survived Ochem to REALLY learn advanced o-chem, while also giving plenty of opportunites to get a good grade (take home midterm, 15% written final). Excellent course, super accessible prof, LONG lab.

Comment:
Ochem with Dr. Friesen is the hardest class you will take in your undergrad, but also exceptionally rewarding. You wont pass any of his midterms, but thats okay, because he has the Friesen policy, which is where your final exam mark will replace any & all midterm marks if it is higher than it. Fantastic teacher, insanely hard test giver.

So strict. Most intense grader I've ever had. Normally I get all A's, my best grade in this class was a C- and I had the highest grade in the class :/

Dr Friesen is very intelligent and you can see how his passion for OChem- & fluorin-burns within him. His lectures are engaging and you learn a lot, however he does assume you're very good with Chem111/12 concepts. Most complain about the difficulty, but I think they're afraid of working hard. It IS manageable but it IS difficult. Reap what you sow

Comment:
Dr. Friesen courses are the hardest courses in the Chemistry department, however you also learn the most. His midterms are very hard, but he has what he calls "the Friesen policy" where your final exam mark can overwrite both your midterm marks. His final exams are reasonable as he does not scale them. He is also very helpful with any questions.

Hardest course I have ever taken. He is a brilliant man but has a hard time passing his knowledge on to beginners in the field of Organic Chem. He taught as if it were a 300 or 400 level course, not a 200. I felt like he expected us to know a lot of material prior to taking this course... and taught as if we had already learned most of the concepts

Organic chem was the most difficult thing I've ever done. He is so nice and a brilliant teacher, I felt like I learned so much, but he doesn't write appropriate tests. The class averages on his tests range from 28% to 40%. It is incredibly depressing and students depend on the curve. The final is usually easier than the midterms, but still brutal.
