He goes on tangents a lot during class. TA is great - very helpful & great at explaining. If you show up to class, Dekle's more likely to bump your grade, but it's not necessary b/c all the info you need is in the Powerpoints & the homeworks. Exams are verrrry similar to homework & practice exams. There's a group project which can be annoying lol

The biggest thing I learned from this class is that USC needs to fail more Ph.D students. Xander was the crappiest/most meme TA I could imagine ever having.

He clearly cares very little about teaching. He reads straight off of slides provided from the textbook and writes his midterm and final entirely from problems within the textbook. He delegates everything to the TA. Yet, as previously mentioned, the TA, Zhou Yu, who he has had for multiple years, is terrible. His grading is completely arbitrary.

Comment:
Average Lecturer. However, the TA, Zhou Yu (Xander), was extremely irresponsible, rude, and confusing. Most of the class was often confused by his explanations. The Final was also undoable, and totally irrelevant to HW and practice problems. Avoid at cost. Take someone else.

Maybe he is a good researcher, but definitely not a good professor. He doesn't know how to explain the concept and teach student how to solve the problems. Spending a lot of time discussion the topics he interested in but not the lecture material. His TA is also useless, self-study is better for this class. Don't waste your tuition!!!

Not the best professor. He may know his material really well but is not able to deliver it to the class. He also speaks very slowly which makes it awfully difficult to not zone out in class. Uses slides from the textbook so you can basically prepare for this class on your own. The midterm and final form the majority of your grade

You will probably learn a lot and the class is fairly straightforward and easy to pass. Dekle is interesting for sure, definitely will not have another professor like him.

Prof. Dekle is the greatest economic educator that works at USC. His class is interesting and helped me fully understand the concept. Take his class if you can. I highly recommend it.

He is kind, but lecture is not good. Still, his course is worth taking because his grading and curve are generous. No quiz, little homework, one small group presentation. Most of the grade is determined by mid and final terms. The TA is nice so you can ask questions to him.

Dekle is a solid economics professor who has a lot of great background in macroeconomics including working at the IMF and the World Bank. There is not much homework and simply a midterm and final. He lectures a good amount, just like all econ professors

I think professor Dekle is very knowledgable. He is also really easy on grading for Econ 653, and very friendly also. As for the grade: 20% midterm exam 30% three in-class presentations 50% term paper for midterm, we had to prepare for 4 chapters! and we had only 3 questions to answer just understand the stylized facts of each chapt

Awkward guy, makes it a difficult class to be in. Went to ask him about possible career advice... told me to become a teacher.... Obviously doesn't want to be teaching. USCs econ department is embarrassing.

He is not the best professor. Econ is not the most interesting subject but he amplifies how boring it can be. His lectures are very unorganized and he never goes into detail about any one topic. Final is 50% of grade. If you are good at Econ you will be fine but if not avoid or be prepared to hangout with your TA alot every week.

One of the worst professors I've had at USC. His lectures are very unclear and he does not go over any material that will be on the test (just study the HW). He's very awkward and unable to answer questions on basic concepts. I stopped attending after the midterm (avg was 40%). I pulled off a B in the class, but I learned absolutely nothing.

Avoid if possible. Class is a waste as he doesn't know how to teach the material and doesn't show any interest in trying to teach either. His grading is unclear and you won't know what you get until the end. Save yourself the torture and just avoid when registering for ECON 305
