Genuinely a good professor. Work load seems difficult at first, but once you know how to handle it it becomes manageable. Very lecture heavy, and while attendance isn't graded, you're not going to want to miss the content. Not a super harsh grader, especially if you show interest & knowledge in the content area. Recommend to majors, not for gen ed.

This guy knows his stuff and takes his subject and lectures seriously and expects the same from you. Genuinely made me feel inspired. Show up for class, participate, and do the work you should be good. Taking Archaeo of Athens this semester and hoping to get into another class with him.

This is definitely one of the most challenging courses I've taken, he pushes you to analyze the bigger picture in the context of history as opposed to surface level teaching. His lectures are captivating if you're interested in what he's teaching, and it's so obvious he knows what he's talking about. Ask genuine questions and be engaged to do well.

Would not recommend this class unless you love memorizing 100s of images for quizzes that account for too much. I took this class as a hist minor and there was little historical background given, instead its more of a bad art history class. The few papers he grades very harshly with little feedback. Avoid this class if you can.

Lectures are difficult to listen to, "um" and "ah" are his two fav words. However, he's an easy grader and gives valuable feedback. Wants you to succeed, just take the class seriously. Speaking up helps a lot. The quizzes involve memorizing dozens of images and building plans, so get ready to study. Easy to get in touch outside of class.

DO NOT take this class as a Gen Ed, a HUGE mistake on my part. You literally have to memorize 100+ photos and the EXACT details of them. Lectures are heavy on info and can get tedious. Professor Becker seems passionate in what he teaches but execution of it is not good - there needs to be less emphasis on the constant memorization. Harsh grader.

Do not take as a gen ed! You will completely regret it. Extremely dull lectures unfortunately filled with they key information you need to pass. Very hard quizzes that lack guidance for studying. Prepare to memorize 100s of images. He seems like he really cares for the subject but his delivery is poor and he's unnecessarily harsh with specificity.

Thought it would be easy but turned out to be the hardest class I took. The quizzes were terrible, no guidance as to what to study, and makes you memorize 100+ images per quiz. However, relatively easy midterm and final if you paid attention and study. Lectures could get boring, and more about art/architecture than the real cities. Stay away if can

Professor Becker is an incredibly knowledgable and engaging professor who expects a lot from his students. Yes, the classes have an image quiz component that requires studying, however, if you reach out to him you will see that he genuinely cares about his students and just wants you to put in the effort. His classes are not an easy gen-ed.

Hardest GenEd class offered. Do not recommend if you are looking for an easy grade, he grades hard and sometimes barely hints to what you are supposed to be studying. Do not skip class either.

I took him for Ancient Cities. He makes this class way harder than necessary. The quizzes are 5 images, usually of city plans, and u have at least 50, usually almost 100 pictures to study to prep for five. And he is terrible at helping and giving feedback. This is an art history class where u also memorize city plans. And he is a dry lecturer.

I took this course in my first semester, thought it would be an interesting class. It was a very difficult class that relied on memorization of hundreds of images. I would not recommend taking this course if you don't want to get a degree in archaeology/classics.

When I read the class description I thought it'd be an interesting class and took it for a gen-ed. Turned out to be a hassle and I spent so much time studying for this class. There are weekly quizzes which require you to memorize 50+ images each week with a hard midterm and final worth 30% each. Class hurt my gpa, I encourage you not to take it.

Lots of quizzes, but actually learned a lot. If youre interested in the subject, Becker definitely knows his stuff and is clearly passionate about the topic. Had to work a lot but it was definitely rewarding. Hes also just a really nice guy with a good sense of humor, great proffesor.

A quirky professor but very knowledgeable and friendly. Quite a bit of assigned reading which you were then quizzed on weekly. The quizzes are impossible to pass if you don't retain the reading. Five 2 page essays that were a breeze and fairly easy midterm and final if you paid attention.
