Professor Hlobil is an intense and thoughtful lecturer. He is definitely a tough grader. Write seriously and clearly and you will thrive. Do what you're supposed to do as a student, and there's no reason why you shouldn't do well. Skip class and readings? You will not do well. Be serious, be diligent. His classes are very rewarding.

This course has a lot of readings (40+ pgs./week) and short, easy quizzes on those readings to make sure you've read them. There's some groupwork, a midterm, two group projects (one simple programming and one presentation) and two short papers. Keeps the class interesting and encourages group discussion. I enjoyed him as a prof.

manages to make the material interesting. undoubtedly my class with him was the best-organized zoom course i've had by a long shot. the readings can be dense, small weekly quizzes keep you accountable, but no matter how difficult the readings get, the lectures clarify it all after the fact so you're prepared when the major written work is assigned.

Prof. Hlobil is a really intelligent and great teacher. The material is really interesting, and he makes you keep up with it through weekly quizzes. Be prepared to do 30-50 pages of reading per week. He posts the lectures online, but, he removes the in-class discussion. So it's best to go to class and not listen to the recordings. 10/10 recommend

He is awful not because his class is not interesting, it truly is, but he himself has no compassion. If you get covid or sick beware he is not flexible at all, not accessible other then his office hours. Does not record questions during class due to privacy issues, pro or con depending on you but if you miss class beware.

Professor Hlobil is a great lecturer. Willing to answer student questions, and participate in thinking about an issue with them. Really intentional in his teaching. Show up to class, give a crap, and you'll do well. If you don't care, and think 30 pages a week is too much reading, then you're in for a tough ride.

Theres a lot of reading (usually 2 per week) for which you have to take a quizz before each Monday class. You cant skip any of them. Other than that its a really interesting class but if you wanted to take it as an elective to reduce your work load you will be disappointed. But if youre ready to work, you will enjoy it.

He's everything a student would care for in a prof. He is very well able to translate complex readings into comprehensible and coherent lectures. Also adds rich humorous content to them. Great guy. Funny guy.

He's a really nice and down to earth guy, and tries to tell jokes all the time. A pretty easy grader I'd say I didn't spend a lot of time on this course and got A, and the class average on the essays are like 8/10. He also posts all the powerpoint from class on moodle, which is pretty convenient for reviews and in case you skipped some lectures

He is not a bad teacher, so much that only a fraction of the class understands and the rest is lost the majority of the time.

He is very thoughtful and, as others have said, is extremely knowledgeable. He really knows how to get to the bottom of philosophical issues/problems, and gives you the tools to be able to do it yourself. The class has a lot of material, but it feels like it will be the kind you'll look back on years after graduating and still think about.

Tons and tons and toooons of work. Lots of readings, written responses and quizzes due every week. Don't take this teacher if you are looking for an easy elective. This class is far from easy and is very time consuming, but, it is also insightful and interesting. Would not recommend to full-time student.

He's a good guy. I like going to his class. The course load is just way too heavy for an intro class. It's a topical approach to many different problems of philosophy. Cut the readings down to half of what it is and give more time and focus to study them and learn instead of all these overwhelming readings. I am not learning, I am just reading.

Ulf is an amazing prof! He really cares about his students and wants to hear what anyone and everyone has to contribute to the class. The readings are very heavy for an intro class (600 page course pack) but we always go through them in detail in every class. Questions, participation and discussion are encouraged. He clearly knows his stuff.

Enjoyable and challenging. Ulf's lectures are great and he is good at explaining the difficult parts of the text. The texts are often quite difficult and attending the tutorials is also important to keep on top of everything. Coursepack is 700 pages.
