Comment:
Dr. Stenner gave us freedom in how the class was structured and acknowledged the class was directed for non-history majors so the work level was made accordingly. There are 2 short essays and the final is 3-4 pages long. The weekly readings and responses can be long but all the assessments and essays are centered around them and the lectures.

Comment:
Do not take this prof. Its a methods and historiographical writing intensive, yet Stenner will not show you how to write an essay of that sort. Grades are weighted HEAVILY and does not care that you have 4-5 other classes. Expects you to read fifteen sources and two books. Plus 5 major papers to write and easily 100 pages of reading a week. Awful.

Comment:
Dr. Stenners class is not for the faint of heart. Be prepared to read and I mean a lot. His grading is very harsh, in addition, when he did choose to lecture it was difficult to follow along. Be prepared to answer in class too because he loves to call on people if no one volunteers.

Professor Stenner is amazing! Though his class is hard and there is quite a bit of reading, he really tries to connect with students and the HIST 216 course is super interesting. One word of advice, he is a tough grader because his expectations are very specific, go to office hours MULTIPLE times for each essay and you're golden.

Comment:
Dr. Stenner is clearly passionate about the subject but I often found his lectures difficult to follow. We usually had upwards of 70 pages of reading a night and pop quizzes on those readings. Only good thing is we didn't have a long research paper, just two short(ish) essays. Only one exam though!

Comment:
Dr. Stenner is very passionate about North African history and it shows. There were around 8 pop quizzes, but they were taken directly from the reading questions, as is the final. VERY tough grader on essays, but he'll go over drafts with you. Very interesting guest lectures throughout the semester. Not easy, but very worthwhile!

Comment:
Dr. Stenner gave out about 10 pop quizzes during the semester. They were not difficult (as long as you did the extensive reading), but they were timed for 10 minutes. His PowerPoints had little text, which requires paying attention to lecture. For homework we would read a chapter in the textbook, then read 2-3 primary sources.

Comment:
Dr. Stenner is one of the most engaging professors I have taken thus far, however, he does make you feel like you need to go into the class already knowing a lot about history. The same students talk in class and seem to have extensive knowledge on the subject already whereas everyone else sits and stays confused. He is so nice and accessible.

ATTENTION EVERYONE: do NOT take a class with Professor Stenner. He is a very nice person but he chose the WRONG profession. He never makes sense in class and you will have 10-12 pop quizzes throughout the semester. It is almost impossible to get an A. You have to read for at least 2-5 hours per night. He's the hardest grader I've had in my life.

Stenner is an excellent Professor, his class does require you to pay attention and read. POP Quizzes are real in this class, emphasis on the POP - you don't know when he'll give one and they're frequent. Content understanding wise, he walks the class through the material to ensure everyone understands what is being taught and its importance.

Professor Stenner is very knowledgeable regarding Middle Eastern history. He accurately and succinctly conveys valuable information that helps students. I especially liked the documentaries he shows in class. Definitely go to office hours for feedback on papers, it's very beneficial!

Comment:
The class has a heavy workload, mostly homework, and has a pop quiz almost every week. When it comes to essays there are only three for the semester, but there are weighted heavily, and there is a slim to none chance of achieving a decent grade. Even if he only edits a minor amount of a paper, there's a good chance you'll get around a D or D+.
