He was one of my favourite professors at UBC. I was a history and philosophy major and his course on modern Russia was one of the most wholesome experiences I had. Professor Timofiiv is as kind as he is brilliant, and has a treasure trove of interesting stories which he peppers his lectures with.

Literally did not learn anything from his class - he does not explain specific events and instead focuses on personalities and random stories. His TA is also one of a kind - highest mark on the essay A-. He's not teaching next year thankfully.

There are various reasons why some of us try to take as many courses with him! His lectures are extremely interesting and engaging, and his expectations for the exams and assignments are nice and clear -- and he's a great grader. He has a minor accent which isn't as big as a problem as some have made it to be! Be sure to keep on top of readings!

Lectures were horrible. Professor had a thick accent, talked in a monotone voice and used no visual aides at all while teaching about very complicated topics. There are so many side stories and he talks so fast that it's impossible to take good notes. You never know what is important in the lecture so it's hard to focus on. Overall, a bad teacher.

I'm surprised that a lot of the people on here are calling him an easyfair marker. In HIST 349 AND 402G this year, the highest grade in either course was an 83. Not even one person had an A in either of those two courses. If you think I'm lying check on UBC PAIR. He's a nice guy personally, just a harsh marker.

I found it near impossible to understand him. The heavy accent wouldn't even be too bad if only his sentences made any sense. He's a nice guy and means well, but I would never take his class again. The work isn't too hard, but the lectures are just torture. We had a sign in sheet on Fridays for participation. There was a midterm, paper, and a final

Super nice guy, but lectures are pretty useless. lectures are repeat of the readings and class reading are heavy load. may have been helpful for office hours if i would have gone. he marks a lot easier than i thought though. as long as you do the readings and attend some lectures you'll do fine. go to his office hours and you'll do great.

Comment:
Professor Timofiv is very kind, but his lectures are quite confusing. They are like one big run-on sentence that covers many topics. I find it hard to follow his trains of thought, embedded with so many side stories and multilingual phrases. Hard to tell if it's test-material or a digression.

Dr. Timofiiv is very kind, that's for sure. Unfortunately, it is tough to decipher what he's saying sometimes. In light of that, you would think he would add lecture slides/notes, but he does not. It's also occasionally tough to get him to understand what you are saying. Textbooks are also unbelievably dry. Not a very inspiring class.

Unbearable lectures. Thick accent, always off-topic. Tests are mostly lectures based, but he assigns HEAVY reading list. Doesn't provide insightful feedback when you consult him about your essay. not a hard marker. Never enjoy his class. He is kind but extremely boring. AVOID. Not an inspiring professor.

A very jovial and pleasant individual. He does have a somewhat heavy Russian (?) accent, so understanding him can be challenging at times. However, he's very helpful when it comes to term papers, and he's a pretty easy marker. Protip: Read the textbooks - that's where most of the exam comes from!

Very nice guy, fair (easy) marker and has many funny anecdotes and stories. Class lectures are relatively off-topic for the exam but give an interesting perspective overall. He is very helpful (and on-topic) outside of class as well!

Had him twice now and everything I thought has been confirmed. Lectures are boring beyond belief and rarely contain anything of substance. He just goes on and on. Tips: Take notes if you wish but be prepared to feel cheated when test time comes around. Read the books he provides [which are always good] and come to class for participation marks.

He was so funny! He made me want to come to class everyday because he always told little asides to the material that were extremely interesting. I DEFINITELY recommend this class to people, even if they don't like history!

His teaching style takes some getting used to at first. He has a thick accent and doesn't write anything down during a 2.5 hour lecture. He assumes students have a deep knowledge of historical events. However, his intimate knowledge of history and his personal anecdotes are refreshing. If you do the work you'll learn a TON and get a good grade.

For a six credit course, HIST 432 wasn't too difficult. I found his lectures hard to understand at times due to strong accent and lack of structure, but I did the readings and got an A. He's a really nice man, very helpful if you have questions. Grade was 20% participation, 20% journal, 30% mt, 30% final. Not a hard marker, but lots of material

One of the best profs I had in UBC! Very helpful and extremely nice! Knows so much about history and always has interesting and funny stories to tell the class. His accent take some getting used to but his enthusiasm and knowledge of the content makes up for it.
