Comment:
Although Lamont King seems passionate in what he teaches, he speaks very slowly to the point that the class is quite boring. he is not clear on instructions so its best to ask him any questions... there is also no rubric for any papers you do or quizzes, etc.

Be ready to write two hard papers. King is nice, but boring. Papers are difficult but tests are easy. READINGS and quizzes on them were the WORST. He doesnt use canvas and rarely is available. Class is not an easy A.

Read and do yourself a favor by learning basic african geography or you'll never understand what's going on. You HAVE to STUDY. The final is cumulative but he grades on a curve

Lectures can be very boring but informative. He'll meet with you and explain in depth. He's very passionate but can go off track. Youtube videos of the vocabulary terms really helped me to connect the dots and understand the material

He is a very nice man and loves teaching. He is really knowledgable in his teachings and I thought a lot of the lectures were interesting but at 8 AM it was sometimes hard focussing for over an hour. There is some reading and you will find more success on the tests if you do the reading.

Dr King was very boring to have. He doesn't do much to help you when it comes to exams. He has a 7 page paper you have to do and very little for you to work with when it comes to it. Gives out no rubrics and hard to please. He stutters and makes way too much eye contact. His lectures are uninteresting and he rambles a lot.

This class was very poorly organized by Dr. King. He was very confusing to understand in lectures and tests were pretty difficult. Good guy, but made this class boring and confusing.

Hands down, the worst professor I've ever taken at JMU. "Lectures" are all over the place, and he just puts a bunch of random words in a word document and rambles on. Before the quizzes, you have to read all the scenarios in a book, and he asks 12 T or F questions that are impossible to remember in the reading because the reading is like 100 pages.

Dr. King really knows his stuff there's no doubt about that. His class can get a little confusing and go far deeper into the subject than a GenEd probably needs to. However, he's an interesting and nice guy. The AFST 200 class is taught across disciplines so if you like history take it with Dr. King. Readings are long and difficult but necessary.

I love Dr. King. If I could design my "perfect professor", it would be Lamont King. He is passionate and vested in your education. I took him for GHIST 150 and then chose to take him again for AFST 200. Now, because of Dr. King, I am minoring in Africana Studies. Highly recommend if you want to become an enlightened student.

So much freaking reading. Literally gave us over 80 pages to read one night for homework. The lectures are only interesting sometimes. He's older and technologically inept. You only have two tests and three papers for a grade. The class isn't awful to take, but not something I'd recommend for an easy A gen ed

King is a sweet guy who knows a lot about history, however he is a horrible teacher! He gives you notes that have no information in them and makes you read an unrealistic amount from the textbook each week. He expects that everyone knows history just as well as him which is obviously not the case. If you take this class, avoid this teacher!

He teaches the material well although sometimes he can ramble and it can get a bit confusing. Take notes of what he writes on the board and says!!! there's 3 tests which has some fill in the blank questions so make use of the study guide he provides! tests have a 3 page essay portion. Lots of reading! But you can get a good grade if you work for it

Dr. King was super enthusiastic. However, the content is boring and its confusing. If you take the class you have to take extensive notes, not on just what the powerpoint says but on his comments too. Study really hard because there arent a lot of filler grades. He does give a study guide which is helpful. wont need the textbook, readings online.

Dr. King is a very interesting professor & clearly knows a lot about Africana studies. His lectures are a little long, but if you pay attention & take good notes, you should be fine. 3 film reviews a semester, 1 midterm, & 1 final. Take your time & edit your film reviews & you should be fine. Shows interesting (yet intense) films.

Dr. King was great! He was really funny and very knowledgeable. His grading is pretty fair. There is a lot of reading. He shows a lot of films that are very interesting and help you to retain information, but they're pretty heavy.

DO. NOT. TAKE. His lectures are long, boring, and unclear. There is an excessive amount of confusing readings. There are only five grades and he can be a pretty harsh grader. There is way too much material and content to cover for the midterm and final. He expects way too much for a general education course.

King is a really nice and such a sweet guy.He really cares about what he teaches. That being said the lecture is poorly organized and it gets very boring. If you read the chapters carefully and attempt to take notes in class you will do ok. He does not put up notes, just a rough outline and then talks about each subject.
